I came in late to DDC in an Archer II years ago. I had left earlier than I wanted to beat weather in, but the weather developed about 6 hours sooner than predicted. Called flight service on the radio and they assured me there was no ice around my destination. Anyway, my friend Josh was with me right seat and tells me that ice is building on the wing. Butt starts to pucker slowly. We are 10 miles from DDC and ATC is giving me vectors for the ILS 14. Ceilings are about 3-400 feet. Well, ice builds, and ATC tells me I am clear for the full ILS14 DDC. I reply "no, I am going to intercept direct ILS 14 inbound." "there is no radar coverage Piper 9****". "We are accumilating ice on the wings, I don't want to risk it and do the full." He helped me as much as he could. Credit to him for not be a regs prick. I caught the inbound course just as the GS came in, and I proceed to shoot a perfect ILS (I did notice a loss of airspeed had more nose up...), land, swing the plane into the open hanger with engine running. The lineman pulls a large chunk of ice off the wing and says,"holy shit notorious". I reply,"I know. I prefer ice in my drinks instead of on my wings". I hop in my car and crank the stereo to come down from the rush. JFC my ass didn't unclamp for a week. Got to love faulty weather reports. This was all done without GPS or autopilot. Your boy has skills back in the day. |

I have had two engine failures, and ATC above ABQ flew me directly into an imbedded thunderstorm. Ice is scarier than all of them. It is an intense ride to death with a running countdown. I hate that feeling of shining a flashlight on the wings looking for ice. Ugh. |

Have you ever flown power line, Run? That is a lot of fun.
I used to do it for the local company every year. They check insulators and the poles. I covered the entire NW part of Kansas from Goodland all the way to Salina and down to around Dodge one year. Nothing like flying 25-40' off the ground for hours at a time. |

I flew pipeline in Oklahoma back in 09. It was great until it was 100+ outside. Then it was like riding a paint shaker at Walmart with blow dryer in your face. But had a blast chasing coyotes. Buzzing homes, farmers in tractors or their daughters in pools out in the country. |

Just Thanful we were where we were when it happened. I don't want to have to be your snuggle buddy for the night if we had to ditch in some field. |
