ESPN lays off Ed Werder day before the NFL draft
And that's just the beginning of the bloodbath. Up to 100 ESPNers are expected to be axed, including a lot of on-air folks. So consider this the ESPN Layoffs Megathread to track all the victims.

I was the demographic ESPN wanted/needed back in the 80s and 90s. I am not what they want now.

Karl Ravech, Ryen Russillo and Hannah Storm to have their roles "significantly reduced" and John Buccigross potentially may not have his contract renewed.

It's the world we live in now. Everything has become so politicized and the internet allows people to be jerks. Twitter is ablaze with people turning this into some kind of political argument. You see it in this thread. It's sad people with a vacuum in their life so they fill it with hate. There's zero politics involved here. ESPN did celebrate Jenner. You know who else they celebrated? Tebow. They spent entire SportsCenter episodes on him. All they care about is attention, and money, and now they're not getting it because so many people are cutting the cord.

They're going to keep doubling down on their 'embrace debate' strategy and their lurch to the left in an attempt to appeal to millennials and remain culturally relevant in a landscape where they are less athletically relevant than they've ever been.
If you can't beat VICE, you may as well join 'em, I guess. This isn't a surprise to any sports fan. People that are hardcore fans of any particular sport get almost all their information from the respective specialized network. College fans turn to their conference programming anymore. ESPN's old business model is dead and they needed to streamline. They've chosen their horse - we'll see how far it takes them.

Hannah Storm literally ****ed her way to the top. She's actually halfway decent now, but she evidently banged the entire chain of command to get there.

But they're going to be more and more of a niche network because that's where all media is headed. To me, they look like they're trying to push towards VICE sports. It'll be a slow transition, but from the outside looking in, that sure seems to be the market they're trying to appeal to. And frankly I think it's because they realize that they've simply lost the hardcore sports fan to the sport specific channels. ESPN will never again be what we grew up on and once they finally start to get out from under some of these burdensome television rights deals that are killing their bottom line, I'll be you see them get even smaller. And in the void I think you'll see the PPV model become more popular for many sports and the regional networks will grab an even larger share of many events. ESPN as we know it is dead but they are going to have a hard time transitioning because they're trying to turn the Titanic here. And they're going to have to do so while also swallowing their pride.
