Got a call this morning from the doctor's office telling me that I need to come in and get an X-ray of my shoulder. While there, I was talking to the tech and said that I didn't know you could use standard X-rays to diagnose soft tissue damage. He said you really can't but the insurance company wants X-rays before they will authorize paying for an MRI.
So basically, they want to needlessly irradiate me before allowing the test I actually need. Gee - thanks? |

It's called "referred pain". After I injured my shoulder but before surgery, every time I flew, once we got to cruising altitude, I'd get this dull, throbbing pain in my left elbow caused by the damage in my shoulder. Also have torn the labrum in my hip, which caused a sharp pain just below my knee. Weird how it works.

I have a torn labrum in my right shoulder, have dislocated/subluxed the joint 5 times. Surgery is a last resort for me, so I opted for PT, and have continued strengthening the joint at the gym fairly regularly since. Stability in the joint is dramatically improved, and pain is much better, but still bothers me at times. Have to be careful with certain motions that shift the shoulder in certain directions and have to suck it up at times, but by and large, my activities aren't limited - I'm involved in numerous sports that involve heavy shoulder action - golf, softball, volleyball. I'm an older dude, as well.
For me, the risks/benefits of surgery weren't worth the possibility of losing the ability to play sports, so PT was a no-brainer. |

I figured I'd do a follow-up on this.
I had an MRI done and they thought the labrum was fine and there weren't any rotator cuff tears. However, my AC joint was severely arthritic and I had a large bone spur growing off the acromion (part of the shoulder blade) that was pressing on the supraspinatus (part of the rotator cuff). I ended up getting surgery to clean out the AC joint and remove the bone spur on February 8th. The surgery was quick and I only had to wear the sling for a few days. There actually wasn't a ton of pain at first and I had decent range of motion. Then, without thinking about it, I kind of did a yawn and stretch thing and felt a flair of pain in the middle of the top of my shoulder and I could no longer lift my arm over my head. My ortho was surprisingly unconcerned about this and figures that I just overdid it. Now at six weeks, I have a lot of the range of motion back (I can actually touch my left shoulder with my right hand now) but I still have a lot of pain in the shoulder and upper arm (mostly in the upper arm). That seems to be confusing the physical therapists as the pain is centered near the bone in the upper arm between the bicep and tricep. My bicep tendon is very sore as are my deltoid tendons. Moving my arm certain ways with trigger a flair of pain that's like a hard cramp. For now, the PTs are treating it as referred pain from the AC joint, so we will see. I am not so sure. If anyone else has had this (distal clavicle excision) done, I would love to compare notes. |

Was this the AC joint or was it the tendon thing you mentioned earlier in the thread?
