Is Marijuana a gateway for harder drugs?

With the legalization of two states, the trend is going to sweep the nation in next 20 years. Being a father, I like to teach my children about certain paths in life to take or not to take. Personally, I don't touch Marijuana and I don't want my kids to touch that at all. But kids just like to listen to their peers.

How does the board view about this?

Alcohol is the gateway drug. Most teenagers start off their partying by going to "keg" parties, and getting drunk. Then while drunk decide to do harder drugs. Thats how it was when I was a kid anyways.

I could easily name 12-15 people in my list of friends and acquaintances that have struggled with opiate/opioid addiction and have NEVER tried a single illegal substance.

In fact, I can think of 2 people that almost died from oxy who haven't had a drop of alcohol or a puff of a cigarette let alone done drugs.

I know 3 people that died from Oxicotin overdoses.

I won't go into detail, but they all smoked weed.. and did meth.. and coke... and acid... yeah. What do you expect? They were musicians.

That reminds me... are you still making music?

In all honesty, I don't think that there is a real possibility for empirical clinical evidence showing 100% causation with regard to marijuana as it relates to specificities in it's "gateway" perspective.

As well, I think that there is certain validity in suggesting that because of correlation, that there is a level of causation in a subject such as this due to the deeper individual psychological and physiological traits that would be associated with this particular subject matter.

As such, the whole "correlation does not imply causation" concept in this argument is just as disingenuous as someone attempting to use the "correlation proves causation" hypothesis as it relates to casual marijuana use and its direct association with "hard" drug use.

Yes, but no more then many other mind altering substance/action.

Anything that gives you a rush or alters you mood or physical state can lead to craving more of that. Craving leads to wanting increased level of that state, which leads to MORE.

Any drug ... alcohol, sleeping pills, caffeine even sugar. Even the endorphin rush people get from running, sex or dangerous activities can lead to wanting MOAR.

I don't recall anyone using the word "imply".

Correlation does not EQUAL causation. That is, and always was, the assertion.

If you want to speculate about the implications of psychology, for example, or upbringing on drug use, let's do that.

But let's dispense with the silly and fallacious notion that pot smoking leads to hard drugs. No study will ever prove it does because you can't prove something to be true when it isn't.

So, you were employing correlation in assuming the Utah to Mormon to anti-marijuana because it leads to hard drugs thing?

There is absolutely zero causality in this line of thought.

You are just like those guys thinking that marijuana is a gateway drug.

Marijuana isn't a gateway drug. What makes it a gateway is teaching users the underground network and getting people used to the idea of illegally buying drugs. It is a very small leap to try out Marijuana. Very big leap to try harder drugs. I would bet that once people get used to a culture of legal Marijuana, you'll find much less people make the leap to harder drugs.

Making Marijuana illegal is completely stupid and I don't smoke pot.
