With all the hand-wringing about offensive bias in recent years, it is surprising that the record for most points in a game (Washington 72, NYG 41 in 1966) is almost half a century old, and the highest scoring game in recent history (Cincinnati 58, Cleveland 48 in 2004) is a decade old. |

People always talk mad shit on me when I say this but I don't see how it isn't true.
The game isn't the most important thing to the NFL. The most important thing is TV revenue...any of you bitching about the game to the NFL will just have to deal apparently. They don't give a shit. |

I wouldn't mind this change so much if they also call the WR's for the same BS. I can't tell how many times I saw WR's push off before the ball was even thrown to get the advantage for a long play.

But to answer your question, the average combined score in 2013 was 46.8 points. In 2005 it was 41.2 (down from 43 in 2004), and in 1966 it was 43.4 (down from 46.2 in 1965). The highest scoring season was 1948, at 47.2 points per game. Since 1947 (67 years) average combined scoring has dipped below 40 points only 11 times, 7 of which were between 1970-1978. Last season was abnormally high, but there have been abnormally high scoring seasons before. |

Yup, that is my gripe with it. I want fair competition, not this legalized cheating crap to let Manning have a better shot at the Superbowl.

Automatic first downs need to be gone by yesterday. Defensive holding should be 5 yards from the LOS, illegal contact should be spot of the foul and repeat the down, pass interference should be 15 yards from the LOS and repeat the down unless the yardage cross the first down marker.

TV ratings play huge into this decision. We joke about the rules trying to get Manning a ring before he hangs it up, but that's not far removed from the truth. The NFL wants to see a Super Bowl that has a final score of 42-41, preferably with one of their golden boys winning it all. Makes for "good TV".

To be honest, the 1970-1978 period is the most interesting to me. I wonder how much of the worry about high scoring is coming from people who remember those as the glory years of the NFL, not recognizing that those years were the abnormal ones, viewed within the entire history of the NFL.

With 13.8% of their 1st downs coming by penalty, the most ref/league favored team is... Tampa Bay. Followed closely, at 13.0% by... Buffalo. Well, that's just 2 teams. let's look at the top quarter of the league, we're sure to see some familiar names... Tampa Bay Buffalo Baltimore St. Louis Indianapolis Arizona Atlanta Tennessee Yep, those sure are the ESPN-preferred, money making franchises the rest of the league is envious of. |
