Not everybody has the capability, patience, and skill to build their own computer. It's not a catch-all answer...

I've had great success on craigslist, but you have to really do your homework. I scored my wife's computer off of CL. $300 got me a 2nd gen i5, 1tb HD, 8 gigs of Ram and a GPU. I got that thing off of a Navy guy who was deploying. We've had it for almost 3 years now and it can run/play anything i've been interested in running/playing on it. I bought my son a CL machine with a Core2 Quad core, 8 gigs of Ram etc for only $175. |

If you just use a PC for the internet/streaming the hardware has no impact on performance at all. It's all about your connection. He would be fine with a Mini-PC with an Atom processor. |

Yeah, I got my iMac on CL.
It's a 2011 21.5" so it was the last one (I think) they build stock with i7 instead of the i5. It retailed for almost $2000 but the lady spent 7 months with it and finally decided to go back to Windows. I got it for $800 and it had barely been used. |

I wouldn't go THAT far, but yeah, i get your point, and i agree to an extent.
However, if you're buying a new machine with a $500 budget, you can do a lot with that kinda coin and the performance increase will certainly make him feel like he got his money worth. Upgrading to a 5 year old refurbished machine with 2gigs of ram probably won't give that same sense of satisfaction. |

But, if you truly only use a PC for the internet, anything more than just a basic PC is a waste. And $150 he can replace one of those every other year. He can't do a build himself for even close to that. But, Still the PC has nothing to do with your experience browsing the internet. Hell my $100 tablet works just fine for that and that's over a shaky wireless connection. |

PC power not only DOES affect your internet browsing experience, it also determines how long your machine will be relevant.
That DIY combo posted will take him far longer to get irritated with speedwise than the refurb. For a hundred bucks more :/ Its easy to build, but if he doesnt want too, I bet he has a local friend who will help him out. Spend a little more and getting a lot more is just better value, especially when he has already set aside 500 for budget. |

It's like eight components. (Tower, motherboard, memory, CPU, GPU, power supply, hard drive and input stuff.)
****. Putting a desktop computer together is easier than a Lego set meant for six year olds. |

I'm not sure I feel comfortable with what I'm looking at to make a decision on what I need to buy or should buy. I've got a friend in Seattle who might help so maybe I'll start there.

We can help you with what to buy. That part is easy.
As for the building... well as was said before, its about as hard as putting together legos. Couple youtube videos up on the old PC as you put the new one together and your golden~ |

Yeah i agree with what others are saying regarding the ease of a build. Seriously man, just watch a youtube vid. Don't be intimidated by it. It's not hard at all. Just double check everything and be thorough, that's it.

That's good because GPU sounds like some university.
