I haven't been since maybe 2010. I enjoyed going to the Topeka zoo more, really. They have fewer animals, but it seemed to be a more enjoyable experience to me.

Omaha and St. Louis are good, and not too far away... probably doesn't help the KC zoo any

And what is funny is that the St. Louis Zoo is free every day that it is open... They don't have these problems....

Because you have to pay to park

In another city where I used to live, there was a summer music and food festival that used to cost $10 or $15 to get into, but they moved to a model where admission was free and you had to instead buy tickets if you wanted food or drink.

What happened was basically what happened at the zoo, a lot of people showed up who didn't have any money to spend anyway, and just stood around terrorizing people and causing trouble.
