OTA #7 REPORT – 5/28

The Chiefs returned to the practice field on Tuesday after the four-day Memorial Day weekend for OTA #7, and the action on the field looked very similar to the flow that they showed in the previous workouts.

Defense, defense, defense was the leader of the day, as the Chiefs offense continues to struggle in putting together all the pieces. They went with a lot of no-huddle segments and the efficiency of the operation was not making Andy Reid very happy. There are still players that have not yet come to understand that the head coach expects a fast pace and cares not that this is May. He reminded them of his facts of life several times during the session.
Reid was especially displeased by some of the mental errors that came towards the end of practice when the players were tired and there were several false start situations and missed assignments.

None of the four quarterbacks had a particularly good day throwing the ball, as there were missed connections everywhere, along with dropped passes and some very nice defensive plays that knocked down a couple throws.
Chase Daniel may have had the best day among the passers, as he hit a pair of long, down the field plays with perfect throws to WR Jamar Newsome and TE Demetrius Harris.

An example of the offensive inconsistency: on a short pass, WR Jon Baldwin allowed the ball to get into his body as he was turning towards the quarterback, and it smacked off his shoulder and dropped to the ground. A few moments later, Baldwin appeared to run the same route, but did so with more quickness and precision, so his body was completely turned toward the passer and he caught the throw with his hands, not allowing it to reach his body. Baby steps for Baldwin.

Rookie TE Travis Kelce had a ball on his fingertips in the end zone, but couldn’t make the catch. RB Jamaal Charles couldn’t haul in a throw from QB Alex Smith and that drop drew the ire of RBs coach Eric Bienemy. WR Mardy Gilyard ran a nice route and got open on an out route, but he couldn’t handle the fastball that Ricky Stanzi threw him.
There were some passing plays that clicked – Harris made a nice grab over the middle with tight coverage from S Brad McDougald. WR Dwayne Bowe had several nice catches, including one deep ball where he got behind coverage from CB Dunta Robinson.
But for the most part this was not a day where the offense showed any obvious improvement.

Here’s more of what went down on Tuesday, as the workout was completed just before Mother Nature sent a bolt of lightning and rolling thunder over the Sports Complex:

– Not practicing at all were RB Shaun Draughn (sports hernia), WR Dexter McCluster (hamstring), TE Tony Moeaki (knee), S Malcolm Bronson (knee). WR Donnie Avery (ankle), OLB Mike Catapano (hamstring) and CB Neiko Thorpe (knee) took part in position drills, but only Catapano got a few snaps in team work. None of the injuries is considered serious.

– Missing from the workout was rookie DL Risean Broussard.

– During the workout, OL Donald Stephenson suffered a hand/finger injury, but he did not leave practice and continued to work.

– With a lot of the work coming in the red zone, it was interesting watching how the No. 1 defense performed with a smaller field of play. The star was ILB Derrick Johnson, with 2 interceptions in the end zone and he knocked down another pass that would have been a score at the back of the end zone. In another portion of practice, ILB Akeem Jordan picked off a Tyler Bray pass.

– Whether it’s now part of the running backs regular practices isn’t known, but Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray and Jordan Roberts took every run they had all the way to the end zone

– Among the rookies on defense, one guy who flashed a bit on Tuesday was OLB Ridge Wilson out of West Alabama. He went vertical and knocked down a pass, and then came off the edge with a nice pass rush. Wilson has been doing some extra work after practice with Tamba Hali and that’s starting to show itself.

– On special teams, the attention was on punt returns and kickoff coverage. With McCluster out, the punt return rotation was WR Devon Wylie, WR Mardy Gilyard and WR Rico Richardson.

– S Sanford Commings has moved up to the No. 2 secondary, plus he’s working with the first until on the second sub-defense with 7 defensive backs.

– Both the offense and defense worked on showing their opposite numbers schemes and plays of upcoming opponents. No word on what teams they may have been trying to mimic, as the looks were pretty standard schemes. At one point the scout offense went to an unbalanced line, with the RT moving to the left side, setting up next to the LT. That’s a familiar play used by many teams, including Oakland and Denver.
The Chiefs have three more OTA sessions scheduled for this week.
