They likely won't get Williams without trading up, but it's an interesting thought.
I think EDGE is a bigger need than WR. |

For me, it's DE and WR. And then everything else. 1a DE 1b WR 2 CB/S 3 DT 4 OT 5 SLB

This offense doesn’t need another deep threat. It needs a WR to get open in single coverage when they’re taking away Hill and Kelce. And it needs one now….not later in the year when they’re finally healthy.
This is lazy ****ing writing. |

John Metchie is a better fit for KC than Williams. I think that probably makes more sense for KC if they're targeting one of the Bama WRs.
He doesn't have QUITE as much crazy speed, but he's on track to be back to football activities by August/September (clean ACL tear, he's already 2 months out), and he's a more polished/rounded receiver than Williams.

They've shown a clear willingness to draft less valuable positions in round 2 and not get immediate returns from them. ACL injuries usually are not a big deal and it sounds like Metchie's falls in the "clean" territory. Not really a predictor of future problems. He doesn't have other injury concerns that I recall.

I’m down with that. Dreams of Jermaine Johnson in R1 and Metchie in R2 run thru my head.

How is it lazy? Hardman is probably gone after next so we have room for another speedster and Williams is a good route runner. Bama does a good job of developing their wrs. Plus the way defenses are playing us with 2 deep safeties. we run lots of crossing routes where speed is a huge advantage. Bring a FA in that already knows the system and can contribute immediately and is cheap, like Sammy Watkins who made $5M last year and will make less this year on a one year deal. 3 years of reps with mahomes helps. I don’t see this as lazy at all.

Personally, I'd like to see both WR and ED addressed in FA + the draft. Say we nab JuJu on a 1-year deal, then Williams would be a perfect pick as he'd have a year to heal before he hits the limelight. I agree that it's hard to expect a rookie DE to come in and put up 10 sacks, so we should look for that production from a vet because there are several quality/affordible options and develop a younger guy.
How about... Move on from Clark, nab JuJu + Clowney, & bring back Ingram... + 1. WR Williams, Bama 2. DE/OLB Bonito, OU Williams heals up then replaces JuJu after a 1-year prove-it deal, and Bonito gets reps 1st year as a pass rushing specialist on 3rd down. Is juju going to be able to pick up the system quickly? Will mahomes be able to trust him? Mahomes needs guys he can trust. You can almost feel it in the game. He has such a trust for kelce and Hill. I doubt he will be able to trust a wr like juju or other fa that come in from a different system quickly. Mahomes needs that confidence to trust his wrs.

Those two things are almost mutually exclusive. There's a much, much greater chance a FA WR can play right away than a rookie in this offense. Not to mention the fact that the WR in this scenario is a guy that won't even be healthy to start the season. Drafted defensive players have a much better chance of playing right away. A drafted DE would play long before a drafted WR, given how this team is constructed. The best answer is to pursue one or more WR's in free agency and focus on defense in the draft. That doesn't preclude acquiring free agent defenders but drafting a WR would be tantamount to wasting a 1st round pick, at least for 2022. |
