Which Is More Important To An Offense: O-Line Or Quarterback?

Just something I have been thinking about lately as I deal with the frustration of my team's crappy line play and you deal with your crappy QB. I know that a great QB can make an O-Line look a lot better, but a great O-Line makes a QB look a lot better too, if nothing other than just by establishing an effective running game. I am undecided on which has a greater impact on an Offense.

Clearly QB is the single most important position on a football team

Oline is still important though, it allows the QB and RB to do their jobs.

Great QB play has an effect on the running game and it also has an effect on the pass blocking.

Give me a great QB over any other position or position group.

Great O-Line; lots of wild card and / or one and done playoff seasons

Great QB; consistently in the hunt for a championship

There is the difference. Throughout the 90's KC had a great O-Line, then during the Vermiel era another great O-Line. What was the end result of either era and is there any difference in the results?

Counter that with Green Bay, or New England, or Pittsburgh. All three have established great QBs and all three are in the discussion regarding Super Bowl runs.

Want a perfect example.

Look at Dallas with that offensive line and Tony Romo.

Look at Dallas with that same offensive line and Brandon Weeden.

But given a Super Bowl caliber Defense and a great Offensive Line what happens?

You start with the QB. The importance of the ol depends on your QB. Some qbs are built to win shootouts. If you have a game manager (that is actually good at it, unlike alex) who has some mobility, you can support him with a run game and a good d. The Russell Wilson model.

You get Tampa Bay & Baltimore (pre-Flacco). One run to a championship and then after 2 years you get to start all over.

Tony Romo was a hot mess always making the critical mistakes until he got the Oline and running game

John Elway is another example

Obviously it's QB, not that it was ever close, but 15 years ago it was a little more debatable. So many teams run the spread and out of the shotgun that mitigate the impact of a really good O-Line.

I'm not saying necessarily great QB/shitty line vs. great line/shitty QB. Say average QB/great line vs. average line/great QB.

Both carry tons of importance, but if you don't have a signal caller that can make the reads or the throws, you're just not going to win no matter how good the line is.

Really? Look at Tampa Bay since they won their SB. They've been a mess for years and are starting over again with Winston.

You want the best shot at consistent greatness? You draft and develop your own QB and stop plugging in JAG after JAG after JAG.
