In the market for a used truck...
I know this has been done a thousand times, but with no search function I just decided to create my own thread.
I'm in the market for a used truck, my absolute top dollar is $20k. Right now I have my choices narrowed down to a 2011 Ford F150 XLT (2WD) with 50k miles for $19300 http://springfield.craigslist.org/ctd/4939278622.html And a 2007 Toyota Tundra Double Cab (4WD) with 81k miles for $18500 http://springfield.craigslist.org/cto/4932526426.html The Toyota is one owner and supposedly has a clean title but I haven't checked yet. Toyota and Ford are the only brands I'm interested in at the moment, but may look into a Nissan. Do the two Ive posted seem like decent deals? Does anyone know of anything in the Springfield area that's better? |

I was in the same place you are about a year ago. Wanted to spend 20, couldn't find anything that wasn't either 2WD (don't waste your money) or didn't have sky high mileage. Ended up spending 26,000 on a 2013 Dodge Ram Crew Cab 4WD with 20,000 miles (in December 2013). Best decision I ever made, the new Dodge would have cost me more than 30k.

I learned this years ago when I was looking for a used SUV and it's the most 'duh' thing in the world once you think about it - supply and demand controls the used car market.
There are a shitload of used F-150s around. Naturally, with a seemingly endless supply of used F-150s, dealerships aren't terribly reluctant to make you a deal on one. If they can quick flip one and make even a few hundred bucks, they don't really care - there's another used F-150 looking to take that spot on the lot in the near future. I'm not really brand loyal at all; in my 15 years as a driver I've had 2 Chryslers, a Nissan and a Hyundai (my toy is a Chevy). My wife's had a Toyota, a chevy and 2 Fords. I'll say this, the fit and finish on our 2011 F-150 is as good as the polish on any of the imports I've driven and both it and the Explorer before it have been reliable as hell. Ultimately, I think used Tundras hold their re-sale so well because they simply don't have the insane market pressures that force dealerships to make you a good deal on them that exist with F-150s. As such, I think their re-sale is largely inflated. They're a quality vehicle as well but not so much better that you can justify the price difference, IMO. Speaking purely objectively, I just think the F-150 is the smarter buy.

People in Columbia kinda complain about these guys taking over every dealership in town - I'm wholly in favor of it. Machens does great work and will make you a damn good deal. P.S. if you guys could go ahead and put McCosh out of business so you'd have a GM shop for me to browse as well I'd appreciate it...**** those guys.

I would say if you can find a great deal on a 2wd truck you really like for about 19 and go to the dealer and see if they could put a Detroit Locker in the rear end you would have true positrack in the rear and if you put a few hundred pounds in the rear every winter you can go about anywhere
I had a locker put in the rear end of my 4wd 2500 Sierra and I can go just about everywhere in 2wd that my dad goes in 4wd with his 2500 Silverado They cost around $400-500 and they are easy to install so it shouldn't be more than your 20 mark after all is done..just an idea |

My last 5 cars were purchased from Machens, 2 at Ford, 2 at BMW and 1 at Nissan. McCosh can go eat a bag of dicks.

I had the option of buying either a 2011 Chevy Silverado ext cab 4wd or an 09 Silverado crew cab 2wd with 30k more miles. I went w/ the crew cab for cab size. Glad I did it.
