Their not trading Gordon. Listen on Hoz and Moose? Sure, if someone wants to overpay for those guys, be my guest.

Hunter (Yeah, he's old, but he still can hit and is a dangerous RH)

Rasmus (intriguing power, but you'd HAVE to carry a 5th OF who was RH with how helpless both Rasmus and Dyson are vs. lefties)

Rios (expensive and his massive drop in power is terrifying, but he's a player who has been seen phoning it in when his team is out of contention in the past. It seems a playoff push would get you an above-average RH bat)

Gomes (RF is a big stretch for him, and the Royals were strongly considering grabbing him in trade this year to help in RF, but he probably could swing 20-30 games out there if necessary as part of a platoon/DH situation).

It would SEEM that you could get crazy production from Gomez and Rasmus in a platoon situation, where Rasmus is the usual DH against righties, Dyson and Cain start in CF and RF against righties, Gomes plays RF or DH against lefties.

That would be a creative way to approach it. Hunter/Rasmus in that pairing would be even better (since Hunter could play RF against lefties and hits RH well enough to DH against righties)

I think a trade would be preferred by KC than what is currently available in free agency. The Colorado Rockies or the Los Angeles Dodgers might be willing to trade one of their outfielders to the Royals for some bullpen help and minor league prospects.

Colorado had Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson, and Drew Stubbs. They also have Carlos Gonzalez coming back from injury. Brandon Barnes only batted .257 but he may just need some additional playing time in the majors. Colorado ownership has also expressed interest to bring back Michael Cuddyer. That creates a crowded outfield that might require a trade.

The Dodgers also have a crowded outfield situation with Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Scott Van Slyke, Yasiel Puig, and Joc Pederson.

I would think Crawford and Ethier's contract and value would make them hard to move. Kemp has a lot of value but he too has a huge contract that will pay him over $21 MM each year for the next 5 years.

I like Charles Cobb Blackmon for what the Royals need. He can play RF or CF. He bats left handed. Had 28 stolen bases, .288 average and 19 HRs last year. He's 28 but won't be ready for free agency until 2019. He can also hit Madison Bumgarner with a .375 average against him. He was the Rockies All Star last year, so they may value him too much to trade.

I would love to have Matt Kemp, but KC would have to get LA to pay part of his $21.5 MM salary per year.

Ian Kennedy would be nice, but you only get him for 1 year and he has Scott Boras for an agent. Free Agent Brandon McCarthy, 175 strike outs and only 33 walks in 2014 looks very good.

Blackmon quietly sucked in the second half. He was a league average hitter last year, had a wRC of 71 away from Coors last year (which would be worse than Raul Ibanez, and good for 17th on the Royals among position players) and did it in his age 27 season.

The counting stats and Coors make him look much better than what he actually is, which is a AAAA player.

Will it be difficult to determine how much revenue the franchise generated with playoff tickets and merch and could any of that money go to payroll?

If I were the Royals, I would be reluctant to sign a hitter that plays for the Rockies. Coors Field makes pitchers look bad and hitters look good.

If you are trading for Rockies outfielders you start and end with Carlos Gonzalez. Even though his salary would be a little much though.

A lot of that money is being split with MLB, the players, and the other playoff clubs.

The rough rule of thumb is maybe $1MM per game. So, maybe the Royals got about $15MM extra from the postseason, plus whatever extra enthusiasm and increased ticket sales in 2015.

I didn't realize how bad it got for Blackmon in the second half. Ouch.

The Rockies guy that makes the most sense/seems like the best fit for KC to me is actually Drew Stubbs. i don't buy his significant improvement against RH in 2014 as a long-term thing yet, but he would be an interesting platoon partner for Jarrod Dyson. He's a RH bat with good pop against lefties and a career .823 OPS against them, and he's got a good defensive reputation.

It would seem Stubbs could offer the opportunity to sacrifice very little defense with Dyson out of the game while offering a major offensive upgrade against lefties. He's also an effective and efficient base stealer, which fits what the Royals like to do.

The biggest problem with Stubbs is that his likely unsustainable good year against righties probably inflates his value too much.

Yeah, playoff shares have to be funded somehow!

I'm hoping we see 4-5k extra season tickets sold. That would be a 50 percent increase, but I think/hope a lot of corporate entities will jump up and buy season tickets/more tickets since the Royals are a "hot" item in town.

If they can get that type of increase, with another winning season, I think we can see KC get to 27-28k in average attendance, which would be great.

Ultimately, HOPEFULLY, this year helps Glass realize that spending money helps you MAKE more money in baseball. And we do indeed see the payroll pushed a little more, into the 95-100 million range.
