More Fun with Cable Companies: CenturyLink

I ordered CenturyLink internet along with DirecTV in a package deal two months ago. In doing so, I specifically requested that they mail me the self-installation kit as I deal with routers and other computer peripherals on a day in-day out basis. The install is easy, and certainly not worth the disgusting $110 charge associated with having someone come out.

Anyways, I was at work, and sure enough: a CenturyLink technician comes out and starts hooking up my Internet with my wife at home. She wasn't aware what was going on and let him in to do the work. Since then, I've cancelled CenturyLink because the service in the area did not meet the requirements for easy Skyping with the wife and kid as I deploy often.

When cancelling my account, I highlighted that somebody had come out to install my service without my authorization. I thought that was the end of it....until I received a notice from a collection agency for $110 only ONE MONTH after closing.

I called a CenturyLink customer service rep, and despite my mild-mannered nature: really railed into her about this bullshit. In the end, she could only tell me that the work was done, so I'm on the hook for the $110. I asked for the manager, and am supposed to get a callback tomorrow.

Now, I think of myself as being extremely fair when it comes to dealing with companies. I don't try to sleaze my way out of purchases. I ask you fine gentlemen of ChiefsPlanet: what would you do and what recourse do I have here?

I would have actually done the install myself and told the tech to **** off

I would pay the 110 so I don't take a credit hit then start raising the flag. Write a certified letter to the CEO of the company and tell them your story.

Dispute the charge with the collection agency. They have to prove the debt is valid and I'm guessing u didn't sign anything agreeing to the charge. You could also threaten to get a lawyer and subpoena a copy of the recorded call

CenturyLink doesn't allow any kind of porn to come over DTV when you get a package deal like that. Upstanding Christian company.

If he has proof he told them not to do it. He is free and clear. Threaten court. And tell them to remove the credit ding.

I think you're probably screwed. I'd try to fight it given you cancelled the service.

They made a mistake sending someone out but they can't do the work without someone letting them into the house and I'm sure signing off to do the work.

Thought about investing in Century Link-they pay a nice dividend- now I see why.
