Covitz:Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’
Former Chief Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’
Cornerback Brandon Flowers may have lost his job with the Chiefs, but he didn’t lose his self-confidence. Flowers, who was quickly signed by AFC West rival San Diego last week, 11 days after his release by the Chiefs, blew his horn pretty loudly in an interview with NFL Network last week. Here’s an excerpt from that interview with Flowers, who last year made the first Pro Bowl in his six-year career, though he had been moved from left cornerback to a slot corner early in the season. On who’s the best cornerback in the NFL: “First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football. Don’t let my injuries last year fool you and take my name from that top list. One guy whose game I definitely respect throughout the years was (Darrelle) Revis. Coming from a system that he played in, it’s a lot of man-to-man being played, him shadowing receivers, and he definitely put in that work. Not to say anything else bad about the other corners, but Revis is definitely a corner I respect in this league.” On how he felt when he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs: “I was very surprised when it happened. I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.” On his familiarity staying within the division affecting his decision: “That made it comfortable. I also respected San Diego playing them throughout the years (and) how they run their organization. I always had respect for their players. It’s always hard fought, tough games when we played San Diego. I always sit on the other opposing side that I would love to play for a guy like Philip Rivers. He’s so fiery. He’s always got that attitude. He’s got that ‘want to.’ You can’t ask for nothing else from your leader. I think it’s the perfect match for me.” On his favorite thing from Kansas City and his favorite teammate: “My favorite thing about Kansas City was the fans. It felt like I never left college playing for Kansas City. No matter if we were winning four games … it was still crazy. You go to the malls, and everyone had on red. It was crazy. The fans were definitely my favorite thing about K.C.” “As far as teammate-wise, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles were both my boys. (I’ve) been teammates with those guys for years. Off the field, we were always together. Those are my two. I can’t pick one over the other.” |

I also think this is a huge reason why Watt is so valuable. Forget the sacks, the guy has an elite knack for getting his hand is passing lanes. |

You guys have just basically said 75% of the QB's in the leauge aren't susceptible to pressure. And every team has 2 shut down corners and 2 others that can cover for a weak pass rush. Yea CB is way more important than pass rusher.
Recent draft history proves this point right? I mean Clowney went way after the first CB in the draft right? Carry on with yourselves. |

2014 - DE, and OLB taken before CB 2013 - 2 DE, OLB taken before CB 2012 - 2 CB taken top 10, 3 in round 1 and honestly I don't know if any of them will be worth it and all look to be possible busts (Clairborne, Gilmore, Kirkpatrick) 2011 - not a single CB taken in the 1st round 2010 - 2 DT and S taken before CB. 2009 - not a single CB in round 1. Draft history does not indicate CB is more important then pass rusher. While its opinion, its unbiased opinion. Flowers is rated 1 spot LOWER than Cooper in BR top 100 CB's of 2014 so apparently there isn't expected to be huge drop off. Flowers is ranked 80 out 100, Cooper is 79 and Sean Smith is 65 which is higher than all those guys taken in the 1st round in 2012. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...erbacks/page/7 On another note Carr barely made the list at 99. |

... And nitpicking here but Stephon Gilmore is far from a bust. He's actually pretty good. |

There is no defensive position more important than pass rusher, and that includes CB.

So are we pretending that Flowers sucked now that he's a Charger?

The rule changes have forced pass rushers to let up. A solid secondary is more important now than ever...

He's been banged up and playing (mediocre) hurt for the last 3 years. I'd say, fully healthy, he's in the top 15-12 range...

Statistically speaking (Comp % against, QB rating against, YPA against, and total yards against) he was top 5 from 2009-2012.

Even in listing his "overall", the article had nothing positive to say about his play. He missed time and was largely ineffective when he actually did play, including the Super Bowl.. |

Like I said, I was nitpicking. It's not really something I even care to argue about.
Not a big deal. |
