Monday Musings: Why smoking-hot Chiefs could catch the Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs won a playoff game Sunday.

What?

Take a look at their remaining schedule. Now you will realize what I mean by saying their 30-22 victory over the Buffalo Bills puts them in the playoffs. The Chiefs, who have won five straight games, have a schedule softer than a perfectly done piece of a brisket from one of those Kansas City barbecue joints.

The final five games of the season for the Chiefs: at Oakland (5-6), home against San Diego (3-8), at Baltimore (3-7), home against the Browns (2-8) and home against Oakland. If the Chiefs don't make the playoffs, it will be a great choke job.

That's why I said beating the Bills was their first playoff game. At 6-5, they are essentially in the postseason looking at what's ahead on the schedule.

What's even more surprising is they could actually be a division winner. With Denver at 9-2, the Chiefs, who split with the Broncos, are three games out in the division. Denver has a tougher schedule down the stretch with some big games, including a home game with the 9-2 Bengals. It's not likely, but it's possible for the Chiefs to catch them.

The Chiefs have now defeated the Steelers, Bills and Texans, three teams who could be pushing them for a wild-card spot. That matters.

Kansas City beat the Bills by rallying from 10 points down and behind an offense that moved the football and scored points. The running game proved that it matters little who carries the football for the Chiefs.

Spencer Ware rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. He became the third Chiefs runner to gain 100 or more yards this year after Jamaal Charles and Charcandrick West both did it. West missed the Bills game with a hamstring injury, which allowed Ware to get his shot.

Spencer Ware comes up big for the Chiefs in spot duty. (USATSI)

That's what happens in Andy Reid's offenses. The backs run for big numbers. The concern in Kansas City has been the passing game, but even that looked good against the Bills. Alex Smith threw for 255 yards and two touchdown passes.

The Kansas City defense gave up some big plays in the passing game, but did enough to find a way to pull out the victory with a fourth-down stop late.

This hardly looks like the team that lost five straight games after opening with a blowout of the Texans. There was some bad news for the Chiefs as star pass rusher Justin Houston left the Buffalo game with a knee injury. Any time lost for him would be a tough blow to take for the defense.

But the reality is it's almost about getting ready for the playoffs now. Even if Houston misses time, it's hard to imagine the Chiefs not making the playoff party.

Then again, it started for them Sunday.

We're 3 games back with 5 to play, and Denver just beat the best team in the conference.

Not happening.

Besides, who wants to back into a division championship? Weaksauce.

That's a stupid statement-how would winning 10 in a row and Denver losing be backing in?

Winning the division is highly unlikely, but it would be the opposite of backing in, the only thing remotely "weaksauce" is your analysis.

I'm not sure most on this site understand what "backing in" actually means, as I've seen it misused quite a bit.

"Backing in" means playing poorly and losing lots of games near the end, but still earning a playoff spot. For the Chiefs to catch the Broncos, they would have to win at least 4 of their last five, which would be 9-1 to finish the season. That seems like the opposite of "backing in".

Actually backing in means relying on others to lose to get in. We are not in that position. If we win out we are in.

Since Clay is talking about a division championship, it fits the criteria.

We need the Broncos to lose 3 games, one of which has to be a division game, to have any shot at the division.

So, 10 game win streak to win the division < wild card, or not making the playoffs?

Seems to me that not even a fan of a consistent playoff team, Pats for example, would think like that. Gotta be something else going on here.
