Earl Campbell On Helmet Rule - "I Played Football With My Whole Body"
I was waiting for Earl Campbell to speak up about the new helmet rule.
For you younger guys back in the 70's/80's Earl was one of the fiercest running backs and used his head and his whole body to run over everyone. Earl Campbell was the true definition of the word "beast". No one wanted to tackle him. Earl says the new rule is a joke and he would never had lasted if it was in place in his time. "The quarterback is going to end up wearing a dress." "Just play flag football." http://www.csnhouston.com/football-h...fl-rule-change |

Punt.
I'm trying to remember how many times I saw a head on hit by a RB like that last year and can't think of any. Can't say I can see it being called more than maybe 10 times the whole season. Probably didn't need a rule for it, but I guess it's the offensive complement to the "can't lead with the head on tackles" rule for defense. Also, Jim Brown said he never used his head and was cool with it. Good enough for me. IMO, Jim Brown > Earl Campbell > Emmitt Smith |

All these ****ing rules and rules changes is nothing more than window dressing. It won't change anything as far as injuries go. Players will react with instinct and lower their heads when they feel a collision is coming. Last edited by houstonwhodat; 03-21-2013 at 05:52 PM.. |

I'd be surprised if this is called a dozen times this year.

Lots of other players did the same thing and can walk fine. Earl ****ed his back up more playing the way he did. http://texnews.com/1998/texsports/earl1011.html http://blog.chron.com/sportsmedia/20...ies-departure/ "While Campbell’s origins in Tyler and his playing career make up a significant portion of the film, the bulk of it is about his post-career struggles with spinal stenosis, the congenital condition that could have led to paralysis had he been hit in a certain fashion during his playing days, and the resulting back surgeries that led to dependence on alcohol and pain-killers that required him to seek assistance a couple of years ago." |
