"Not "Worth" The #1 Pick???
I have heard soooo many columnists and "experts" comment about the fact that there really isnt a QB "worth" the #1 pick.
What a bunch of horse crap. In the old CBA, when you had to pay the #1 pick $60-$70 million, I could understand this arguement and could agree with that. But in today's CBA, you dont dish that much out. Andrew Luck's contract was for $22.1 million over 4 years. Yes, they had to pay $14.5 million in a signing bonus but so what?! In 2010, the Rams paid Sam Bradford a 6 year, $78 Million dollar contract with $50 Million GUARANTEED! Thats $13 million PER YEAR vs. Luck's $5.525 Million per year. So even if Smith or whomever isnt the true Best Player available, I really dont think that in a situation like ours, where QB is such an obvious position of need, that $22 million for the #1 pick is really as big of a "reach" as we are led to believe by the experts. To give you a comparison to Luck's #1 pick contract from 2012 at $22M, in 2010, this would be equivalent to the contract given to the #12 pick in the 2010 draft, Ryan Matthews in SD for $25.65M over 5 years. Heck, I say draft a QB in Rounds 1, 2 & 3! Give us some frikken QB competition! Rant end. |

This only further goes in line with my argument. As the #1 pick in his draft (2005), Smith received a 6 year, $49.5 million dollar contract with $24 million guaranteed.
If we draft Geno Smith at #1, he wouldn't get a contract even close to that.

Players are a crap shoot. Qb is the biggest of all. Geno , tyler, barkley, bennon. All of them could be great or flop. I hope the chiefs evaluate them all to death and take the best prospect.

We can't take that chance. We should settle for a Geno Smith that's still alive.

If you could trade the #1 pick for multiple picks and still get your QB, what's the harm?

I agree... but if you can't, then I have absolutely no issues with them taking him as a "reach" at #1.

But who's going to give up picks to get to #1 this year? There isn't a dominant player that teams can't do without. Just a bad year to have the top pick both from a pick yourself and a trade the pick standpoint.

Because they will **** it up. Determine the best QB available and take him. **** draft value.

Have to agree here. This pick is too important. Figure out who your guy is and take him. **** Kiper and McShay and their talk of draft value. Can you imagine how bad a franchise would be ran if you just made choices based on draft value?

Understandable point, but why would any team trade up? What player in this draft is worth trading up to #1 for?
