Ten Things About Tonight's Game: Week 5 KC 42 HOU 34

Ten Things About Tonight’s Game: Week 5: KC 42 HOU 34

10. I can’t really explain it, but for some reason, KC seems to have Houston’s number. Sure, we’ve lost a few games down there in years past. But when it really counts -like the playoffs- or if it’s a national spotlight big time game, we seem to play well on their turf. During the day I kept thinking that after the Hurricane issues there, this would be a big emotional gut check showcase for the team and city. Their fans had already watched the Astros blow a 3-0 first inning lead in Boston to lose 10-3 in the ALDS, so they were ready for something positive to happen. Then when the game gets cranked up, they lose both Merciles and Watt in the first seven minutes. Watt’s career may be in question. Last year he had two back surgeries, and they said they thought his leg was broken right under the knee. It also looked to me like both the injury to Merciles and Watt were not contact inflicted. Sometimes you’re the windshield. Sometimes you’re the bug.

9. It seemed to me that the Texans strategy was to key on Kareem Hunt and take him out of the offense. They did a pretty good job of that for the first three quarters of the game. It was interesting that Hunt got the first carry of the game for nine yards, and the first carry in the second half for nine yards. Hunt finished with 108 yards, averaging just under 4 yards a carry. But he carried the ball 29 times. That’s a lot of carries. Don’t want to wear the dude out; he’s only a rookie. Surprised they didn’t pass to him more. The screens they tried to him got blown up. He wears teams out. He’s done the same thing to every opponent we’ve played this year. He gets stronger in the second half. Just hope he doesn't hit a rookie wall in November.

8. Watson’s stats are going to look pretty gaudy with five TD passes. Two of them were garbage time Hail Marys that just happened to hit. If he keeps running around like Daffy Duck, somebody’s gonna clean his clock this season. Alex had a very good night. He finished 29 of 37 -that’s about 79% completion rate, had 324 yards, no picks, three TDs (one was a shovel pass to DAT) and was only sacked once behind a makeshift line. Alex spread the ball to ten receivers, which is always a indicator of a good night for him. He also rushed for 19 yards, running away from trouble to keep drives alive. KC was 9 of 15 on third down, including converting 3rd and 11 twice, and converting a 3rd and 16. That’s pretty damn good, especially on the road.

7. The hit on Kelce to put him out was borderline dirty. It was a bang bang play. He held onto the ball, but it looked like the defensive back led with his helmet. Kelce was two yards shy of another 100 yard receiving night, and he was a monster during that first half. If they wouldn’t have laid that hit on him, he may have gone for 200 yards receiving. Let’s hope he’ll be cleared to play vs. Pittsburgh. Alex relies on Kelce to get out of trouble.

6. It’s interesting that we’ve played against two former KC linebackers as DCs for the opponents two weeks in a row - Manusky last week and Vrabel this week. Unsung hero on offense was West. Not only was he great in blitz pickup (he totally killed a blitzing corner on one play) but then made a tough catch for his first TD on an Alex scramble, and make a great juke move on the second TD to beat three Texan defenders to the end zone. He’s been a very unselfish role player. This guy used to be our featured back. He’s been a great spot player and a team guy. Kudos to West for a job well done.

5. On defense, we gave up 34 points. That’s not good. Really not good to give up five passing TDs. What is more troubling is the rushing yardage given up. Texans had 144 yards on the ground, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. If that doesn’t improve, we’re going to see another Pittsburgh beat down with Bell running amok next week. Houston got dinged. Zombo (or Zombie as some of you like to call him) had mixed results. Lots of the rushing yardage was running right at Zombo. That’s one thing he has in common with Dee Ford, neither can hold the edge on the run. It’ll be interesting when we get Tamba Hali back if that improves. Perhaps the one saving grace for the defense this week was KC dominated TOP, with KC 38 minutes and Houston 22 minutes. That means we kept Watson off the field for a good portion of the game. All in all, this game was not as close as the final score (a single possession difference), and the big factor in deciding the outcome was the specials.

4. Tyreek Hill showed a lot of guts in this game. He tweaked an ankle, got taped back up, went back out and caught four for 68 yards, including a 38 yarder that he may or may not have got both feet in (personally I think we lucked out on that call). The Texans coach is a buffoon. You never, ever EVER punt a ball straight down the middle of the field to Tyreek. He will kill you. Tonight he was 82 yards of blue streak napalm to put the dagger in the Texans. When he runs it back it’s a 19 point lead with just over seven minutes left. Th…th…th…that’s all, folks. Also big kudos to the Buttkicker. Five for five on FGs, true on all his extra points. Can’t ask for better. And he only allowed a couple kickoff returns. KC only punted twice, and on one, Colquitt had to make a TD saving tackle. He shed a block and got the guy down. Nice legit special teams tackle. Only negative on Special Teams was losing Steve Terrell right out of the chute. He got kicked in the head. He’ll be OK, but he’ll have to clear concussion protocol.

3. Peters had another mixed night. On a running play right before the first half two minute warning, Peters got steamrolled by Foreman as he was trying to pry the ball out instead of getting the guy on the ground. He gave up another ten yards on that run getting trampled. On the Texans first TD to Hopkins, he got free from Peters and then beat Parker to the ball. Then in the third quarter, Peters gets beat to give up a TD on a fourth and one play. At least he broke up the ensuing two point conversion. He had no picks, and only had two tackles. I was listening to the Chiefs broadcast while watching the game. I know Peters was throwing a fit over on the sideline, but I have no idea why. Imagine what he’s going to do if we actually LOSE a game? Ron Parker was the leading tackler with eight tackles. It’s not a good defensive effort when your safety leads the defense in tackles. Sutton needs to work on this run defense, or Bell is going to eat them alive next Sunday.

2. Very sad to see Chris Conley get hurt. You could see on the video replay the tendon spring under his sock. Again, another non-contact injury. Maybe Houston needs to rip that field out like the Patriots did after their opening night loss? It will be time for Albert Wilson and Robinson to step up. DAT had a nice TD run, he’s a good backup plan in case Tyreek continues to have ankle problems.

1. Andy out coached that boob head coach from the Texans. KC got off to a good start, first possession was a 15 play, 8 minute drive. KC cut down on the penalties, did a nice job for the most part spying Watson, and keeping the Texans at arms length. You never apologize for a victory, and this was our ninth in a row on the road. That’s amazing in itself. Now we look down the road to next Sunday in Arrowhead, a late afternoon game against a team that has owned our ass the past couple games. Rapistburger threw five picks and got his lunch handed to him today. He won’t be that bad two weeks in a row. Pittsburgh will be in an ugly mood after that loss, and they already feel like they own us here. This will be a gut check week for KC to see if this team really IS the team to beat in the AFC. If we can beat Haley and Bell and Brown in our house, that will be a big monkey off our collective backs. Lets hope everyone heals up, we get some guys back, and we figure out a way to stop the run between now and Sunday. Undefeated at FIVE and ZERO. Great Googly Moogly!

You failed to mention all of the FG that should have been TD's.

As usual you cover all the bases George.

The defense is concerning and Peters' temper tantrums are both predictable and tiring. There will be more ugly situations with him, and I wouldn't put it past him to take a swing at a coach or a player one of these days. Dude has issues.

We seem to be to the Texans what the Colts are to us.

It shouldn't, but the garbage time defense really put a damper on what was otherwise a solid win on the road in primetime.

Wish the best for Conley, and I hope Robinson is ready to step in. I'm not sure how much depth we have available, but we're about to find out.

Good write-up, George.

Great summary as usual, George. I'm glad you mentioned what I thought was a key play in the game, that block by West. It was textbook. I was glad he got those 2 TDs, too. Well deserved.
It was disheartening to see Conley go down, he was having a pretty solid night.

I would like to say this team should fire the strength and conditioning group for all of these Achilles ruptures. It is absolutely ****ing ridiculous that the chiefs lose 2 to 3 players every year to these ****ing injuries.

Is there anything these guys can do to strengthen these things. I never hear of other teams getting all of these Achilles injuries.

I think they rushed Kelce back in too soon after that finger to the head. Hope he doesn't have any lingering affects.

there is going to be a shift in the nfl where defenders INTENTIONALLY hit certain offensive players to knock them out. they get their fined/penalized shot to the head, and the player is out. it only costs them 15 yards.
