The Patriots are reportedly already putting Kony Ealy on the trade block

Back in early March, the New England Patriots made a trade to fortify their edge rush rotation, sending a second-round pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for defensive end Kony Ealy and a third-rounder. A mere five months later, the Patriots might be ready to move on from Ealy altogether.

New England already lost defensive end Rob Ninkovich to retirement and third-rounder Derek Rivers (who was drafted after trading down from the pick acquired in the Ealy deal) to injury.

The Patriots have plenty of defensive line depth for their multiple-front packages, but they don't necessarily have many true edge guys around. Matt Patricia's unit plays more of a read-and-react scheme up front anyway, so that type of player isn't as much of a need for the Pats as it is for other teams, but it can never hurt to have more guys that can put pressure on the passer.

It's difficult to see the Patriots getting much of a return for Ealy if they try to send him out again, but then again, all they had to sacrifice to acquire him in the first place was moving down eight spots from No. 64 to No. 72 in this year's draft.

------------
I've never seen him play, other than the Super Bowl and he was pretty impressive. Is he worth a Conditional Late Round pick?

There has to be more to the story. Dudes typically don't leave Cheatriot and do any good. Except maybe Welker.

See if they want Zombo? Maybe another edge guy we are going to cut?

Probably just PPSD (Post Pioli stress disorder) but I'm leery of Belichick cast offs.

There is something wrong, Belicheck always has an angle. You should avoid dealing with the Patriots and the Steelers. If they don't want a player then you probably shouldn't want that player.

He didn't ask for the trade, per the OP the Pats are looking to move him. They move players all the time, even big time stars if Belly thinks their tank is empty and he can get more value out of them in draft picks.

Read my post Donk.

I said I don't want him because there is something wrong if Belichick ships him off.

Weird.

Maybe Pinkel did a better job of covering up some of these guys asshole streaks than I realized. I always thought Aldon Smith was a good kid at Mizzou before he turned into a goddamn lunatic. Ealy was cut from similar cloth; never really had any issues. He got off to a slower start than most figured he would after being a very highly sought after recruit that many considered us lucky to get.

But he really turned things on as a JR after showing nice growth as a sophomore. We all hoped he'd stick around for his SR year but didn't really expect it. Seemed humble despite lofty prospect status and worked hard to make himself into a better player every year.

I never got the impression he was a bad egg or a bad player. Seems odd that he's getting moved for relatively small returns and then being put back on the block that quickly. Maybe just not a scheme fit?

Not sure he's a 3-4 player. Not long enough for a 5-tech and not flexible/agile enough for OLB. I just don't see him being enough of an athlete to make that linebacker transition.

I mean I guess you could see if he can be a situational pass-rusher in a nickel packages; wouldn't be a bad use of a late round pick but he's a pending FA so it would only be for a season before you'd have to buck up or lose him. Not sure I'd care either way if it's a 6th but I'm sure someone would pay that for him higher in the round.

Belichick got him for a ham sandwich. If Rivera tells Reid and Veach that he's not worth the trouble, I'm good with that.

I just wonder what happened to the guy and whether or not he can be "fixed".

He's only 25 years old and should be entering his prime.

Kony has an extreme special needs sister who keeps him from being 100 percent focused on football.

I know he missed some voluntary stuff with the Pats as a result.

That type of split of attention may not completely match Belichick's expectations.

If he could be had cheaply, Kony and KC might be a perfect match (being closer to home/family might help balance his load a little more).
