I watched a show on the History channel about floating tanks on D-Day. Apparently they all worked except on Omaha beach. And those tanks not landing on the beach there is why the only beach we really know about is that one.

The "floating tanks" are called Amphibious Assault Vehicles also known as AAVs. They are the only vehicles in the military that can go ship to shore and assault a beach objective.

I knew a couple of men who walked ashore or parachuted in that day. You could tell that it had changed them. There will never be another generation like that.

Salute to those brave souls.
Thumbs down to the picture over picture that this author did. It would have been much better if the pictures were next to each other.

I could not even imagine going through that. The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan really hits hard when you try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who was there. And that's just a movie; I'm sure the real thing was much, much worse.

My father-in-laws brother was killed during the attack. He never did talk about it - now he's passed on to be with his brother once more.

A generation of super hero's
Also another equally important battle on the sea was raging on this Day in 1942. From June 2nd thru 7th the Battle of Midway raged and the whole battle in the Pacific and our fleet was very much in doubt. If not for really a incredible luck we won the day and literally end Japans Naval strength. Like D Day was beginning of the end for Germany Midway sealed Japans fate. Like D Day the Battle of Midway is recognized on June 6th. A grateful Nation will hopefully always remember this generation they were something special.

My Dad didn't go the initial wave, which is why I'm probably here. And he survived until 2010. God Bless him and all involved. I looked, I guess we could use an United States flag emoticon. Or whatever its called.

Whenever I think things are unfair around me, I go back to the day these boys experienced and it brings perspective. Surreal terror and then death, some before they ever drove a car or kissed a girl.

Those guys get all the attention every year. Sure, they were the first major land assault on Fortress Europe, so it was a big deal, but they weren't the only people in harm's way on June 6, 1944. I think we should also recognize the following events that happened on that date:
The USS Pintado attacked a Japanese convoy in the Philippine Sea, sinking Havre Maru and Kashimasan Maru. Allied bombers conducted a raid on Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The USS Gabilan arrived at Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii, ending its first war patrol. French troops captured Tivoli, Italy. The USS Yorktown left Majuro, Marshall Islands with Task Force 58 bound for the Mariana Islands. The USS Harder attempted to attack a Japanese convoy in the Sibutu Passage between Tawi-Tawi of Philippine Islands and Borneo, but was in turn targeted by two destroyers. Submerging and sailing away from the convoy, Harder fired three torpedoes out of her stern torpedo tubes, hitting destroyer Minazuki twice, sinking her. The Davao Penal Colony on Mindanao, Philippine Islands was closed; the American and Filipino prisoners were transferred to Cebu island. Robert Johnson, the second-highest scoring ace in the European theater in his role as a P-47 pilot, finished his tour of duty returned to the United States. Source: ww2dbase

Sadly D-Day got almost no press coverage as it deserved.
Thanks for posting GB!
