Quick question for heating/air guys.

My outside unit is frozen over. Last night and today have been the first time we've had to continuously run the heat. So its been on about 24 hours. I noticed the freezing when I got home from work a few minutes ago. It's heating up the house fine, but I was worried about the frost and thought maybe something was wrong. I've turned it off, and we're using space heaters until I can get some information on whether this is a problem or not. Pics below.

Thanks, man. I did read some of that earlier. I was hoping bugeater (or pestilence?...can't remember which one) could give me some definitive advice.

Hang on. that is your A/c unit. Not your furnace. Two totally different items. Why are you trying to use your AC now?

You had an ice storm, thus your outside AC unit is frozen on the outside, kinda like your car in the morning. That doesn't matter, you are not using AC. Let it freeze. No corralation towards your furnace. Put a cover on your AC unit over the winter to keep leaves from coming into the unit. You are fine.

AC is for cold, Furnace is for hot. Don't take that wrong.

The reason why it is taking awhile to heat up (running 24 hrs) is to heat up your house.

That pic, is nothing to worry about.

Another issue would be towards your heating (furnace). Check your filters.

If hot air is coming out of your registers, your good. As to the efficiency, make sure you have new, newer filters.

Keep in mind, your house is a closed system...hot and cold. The air circulates both hot and cold.

Your AC unit (pictured) supplies the cold aspect in the summer (it is irrelivent during the winter, thus covered). Your furnace uses the same ductwork to move the warm air in the winter. If you have heat coming out, you are OK.

I'm not a "heating/air guy," but I do know that's an AC unit and has nothing to do with the furnace.

I don't know shit about heating and air, but I know that outside unit was running tonight while the heater was on. As soon as I turned the heater off, that outside unit turned off as well.

The link that livesteam provided suggests that there is stuff in there that works with the heater.

Ah, you're using a heat pump. OK, mockery withdrawn.
