VARSITY
Your interesting Chiefs facts of the week.

Courtesy of some analysis of pro-football-reference. Figures are the player, date, opponent, and yardage. In the case of passing TDs, the QB is also listed.

The longest Chiefs rushing TDs in history:

Jamaal Charles 9/23/2012 NOR 91
Jamaal Charles 12/23/2012 IND 86
Ted McKnight 9/30/1979 SEA 84
Joe Delaney 10/18/1981 DEN 82
Derrick Alexander 12/18/1999 PIT 82
Abner Haynes 11/29/1964 NYJ 80
Warren McVea 10/26/1969 CIN 80
Jamaal Charles 12/9/2012 CLE 80
Mike Garrett 10/30/1966 HOU 77
Robert Holmes 9/28/1968 MIA 76
Steve Bono 10/1/1995 ARI 76
Jamaal Charles 12/13/2009 BUF 76

Observations: Jamaal had a good year in 2012, and ... haha. Steve Bono.

The longest Chiefs passing TDs in history:

Marc Boerigter 12/22/2002 SDG 99 Trent Green
Tommy Brooker 11/18/1962 DEN 92 Len Dawson*
Gloster Richardson 11/3/1968 OAK 92 Len Dawson*
Frank Pitts 11/17/1968 BOS 90 Len Dawson*
J.J. Birden 11/18/1990 SDG 90 Steve DeBerg
Otis Taylor 11/13/1966 MIA 89 Len Dawson*
Stephone Paige 12/2/1990 NWE 86 Steve DeBerg
Derrick Alexander 9/12/1999 CHI 86 Elvis Grbac
Larry Brunson 11/10/1974 SDG 84 Len Dawson*
Stephone Paige 12/22/1985 SDG 84 Bill Kenney

Observations: Len Dawson could throw the ultra-deep ball. San Diego doesn't defend the ultra-deep ball well. Stephone Paige also has the #11 pass. He was quite the ultra-deep threat.

The longest Chiefs interception return TDs in history:

Gary Barbaro 12/11/1977 SEA 102
Tim Collier 12/18/1977 OAK 100
Sean Smith 11/3/2013 BUF 100
Dave Grayson 12/17/1961 NYT 99
Kevin Ross 9/6/1992 SDG 99
Brandon Flowers 10/26/2008 NYJ 91
Mark McMillian 12/14/1997 SDG 87
Dave Webster 10/9/1960 OAK 80
Jerome Woods 10/12/2003 GNB 79
Willie Mitchell 10/30/1966 HOU 78
Mark Collins 12/24/1994 RAI 78

Observations: Sadly, the Sean Smith one is the only one I recall specifically.

The longest Chiefs fumble return TDs in history:

Chris Martin 10/13/1991 MIA 100
Gary Spani 10/25/1981 OAK 91
Derrick Thomas* 12/5/1993 SEA 86
James Hasty 9/8/1996 OAK 80
Sammy Knight 10/16/2005 WAS 80
Donnie Edwards 9/12/1999 CHI 79
Maurice Leggett 11/30/2008 OAK 67
Tom Howard 9/6/1981 PIT 65
Jerry Mays 12/22/1963 NYJ 58
Tyron Brackenridge 9/30/2007 SDG 50

Observations: The Tom Howard one may be the most exciting one ever.

The longest Chiefs kickoff return TDs in history:

Knile Davis 12/1/2013 DEN 108
Noland Smith 12/17/1967 DEN 106
Dante Hall 9/14/2003 PIT 100
Dave Grayson 9/7/1963 DEN 99
Tamarick Vanover 9/3/1995 SEA 99
Knile Davis 10/26/2014 STL 99
Boyce Green 12/21/1986 PIT 97
Tamarick Vanover 10/27/1996 DEN 97
Dante Hall 9/28/2003 BAL 97
Dante Hall 12/19/2004 DEN 97
Jamaal Charles 11/22/2009 PIT 97

Observations: Go, Dante. And Jamaal gets on the list even though he doesn't have many returns.

The longest Chiefs punt return TDs in history:

Dexter McCluster 9/13/2010 SDG 94
Dante Hall 10/5/2003 DEN 93
Dante Hall 12/1/2002 ARI 90
J.T. Smith 9/23/1979 OAK 88
Dale Carter 11/22/1992 SEA 86
Tamarick Vanover 10/9/1995 SDG 86
Dante Hall 12/8/2002 STL 86
Jitter Fields 10/18/1987 DEN 85
Tamarick Vanover 1/2/2000 OAK 84
Tamarick Vanover 12/21/1997 NOR 82

Observations: Dante and Vanover pretty much dominate this list.

The longest Chiefs blocked kick TDs in history:

Lloyd Burruss 12/21/1986 PIT 78
Kevin Ross 12/6/1987 CIN 65
Chris Martin 9/30/1990 CLE 31

Observations: Only three of these, apparently. I expected more.

The longest Chiefs TD in history, not elsewhere classified:

Sherrill Headrick 12/17/1961 NYT 56 (Lateral)

Observations: Not sure what this is.

All-time Chiefs' leader in comebacks:

Elvis Grbac with nine: three on the road against Oakland overcoming 14 point deficits each time, one on the road against Denver, two at home against Seattle, and ones at home against Carolina, Pittsburgh, and San Diego.

I remember my mom saw an interview with Vanover after a game where he had a runback (it wasn't the SD MNF comeback) and he was praising God.

Several years later, around the time of Dante's heyday, she asked me what happened to the other kick returner, "the Christian."

"He was imprisoned for his role in facilitating a drug trafficking ring."

Most TD passes in which the ball travelled less than 5 yards in the air:

Alex Smith - all of them

Most rushes ended by stupidly running into the pile for a 1 yard gain:

Donell Bennett

Dwayne Bowe
Rookie Tony Gonzalez

I don't recall hearing or reading about Jitter Fields before. At all. You'd think a name like that would be memorable, too.

I'll wager Larry Johnson has the single year record for that.
