The Gift of Life

This honestly deserves its own thread. Especially since there's so much negativity now that SR has vanished

So, everyone always says all this stuff about taking over your emotions and choosing how to feel and so on...
But... how?
I've heard this so many times and not once has someone been able to tell me how, or where to start. Which would actually be useful information compared to "you should choose not to be depressed, that's what I do".

Logic. I studied stoicism in college, and my favorite allegory my professor gave was:
Imagine you're sitting in traffic. Maybe it's an accident. Maybe it's just your normal commute. But you sit there, raging and fuming that all of these idiots around you are going to make you late for work, which means your boss will be pissed off. You're angry because you're the victim here of everyone around you.
Or, by thinking logically . . .
You're sitting in traffic, and you're going to be late. Maybe it's an accident -- which you could get angry about, but what does that accomplish? Anger isn't going to make the emergency workers or the debris get out of the way any faster. And if it's your regular morning commute -- well, no amount of anger is going to take cars off the road. Plus, if you face this traffic every day, you know there's going to be traffic, and you know that if you leave past a certain time you're going to be late. So you're going to be late today because you made a poor decision, and it's up to you to make better decisions in the future. So rather than get angry, have the self-awareness to think logically and diagnose the situation and plan ahead for next time.
The key to happiness is realizing that the only thing you control is yourself -- the way you think, how you feel, and the actions you take as a result. You can't stop accidents from happening or traffic from congesting, but you can get your ass out of bed ten minutes earlier than you want to. Take charge of your life. Decide how you are going to react to situations. Otherwise, you'll only ever see yourself as the passive victim of other people's actions. You'll spend your whole life pissed off, upset and probably afraid.
