But it'll be completely different with a top receiver like Maclin on his team.

Reids system is built on spreading the ball around... It's complex that's why he likes Smith so much... "he's got the gigabytes".

How can you spread the ball around if the only damn place he'll throw the ball is within 10-15 yards in the middle of the field, or short WR screens? McNabb was a big time vertical QB.

That's not the least bit surprising. Maclin might not do it either. Reid has always loved throwing short passes, and he loves throwing passes to the running backs. There was one season they targeted Brian Westbrook 118 times. It doesn't matter who the QBs or the WRs are.

Never had a 4000 yard season.
Only cracked 3500 twice in 13 seasons.
Career YPA 6.9

His numbers actually look eerily like Alex Smiths.

McNabb was definitely less afraid to throw downfield than Alex Smith is, but yeah generally they ran the same offense. Lots of horizontal passes, screens, passes to the RBs. Look at the numbers Duce Staley, Westbrook, and McCoy used to put up. Reid's goal is to get speed in open space.

Same thing with Charles. I don't think he'd ever been targeted over 50 or 60 times in the passing game. Reid's first year they threw it to him over 100 times. He literally has not changed his offensive approach in 15 years.

Easily... you throw the ball to the middle of the field and WR screens.... you just don't consistently target 1 receiver while you are doing that. This is really the only passing game that works with a crappy line. You just don't have time to do anything else. Combine that with the fact that Smith isn't going to waste a down going deep unless the percentage for completion is really high. Becuase the current offense is so dependent on the quick passes, short gains, you can't afford too many low percentage plays.

Hate on Smith all you want. But it's simply the reality of the Chiefs offense right now. Maclin was a nice step toward improving that, but nothing changes unless you can shore up that line. Everything hinges on the o line.

Everything.

McNabb played in a completely different era where 4,000 yard passers were hard to come by. I don't have any issue whatsoever with what Smith does in the screen and dink and dunk game. I take issue with what he does outside of that. I am just making the point that Reid could run the same offense he does today and still play a shitload more aggressive because it's what McNabb did. Alex Smith isn't spreading defenses out because he's afraid to throw to the outside and he never throws vertical. The defense stays in the box for the most part.

No, it is not the reality. If Smith wasn't so damn conservative, he could get rid of the ball faster if he threw into tight spots or threw his receiver open. If Smith stretched the field, he wouldn't see pass rushes attacking the daylights out of him as he currently does. If he could stretch the field out, he might open room for Charles to actually wiggle some yardage, which would then force pass rushers play more passive against him.

The OL sucked. The WRs weren't great. But the idea that Smith didn't also play a part in the pass rush is wrong. Again, the Chiefs' OL at the end of 2013 was also bad, but they looked good blocking for Smith. It's because played an aggressive style of football those 8 games that he's refused to play the other 25 games.
