What is it about computer work that people think they can pay with dinner?

I hear it all the time.

"Hey, my computer is acting up. Can you come take a look at it? I'll make you dinner."

"Can you come help me with my website? The payments are all failing. I'll make you a steak!"

Yet it's unheard of for me to try something like that with my needs.

"Hey, my main line is backed up because of tree roots. Can you come fix that for me? I'll make you dinner."

"Hey, will you paint my house? I'll have a fat steak ready for ya when your'e done!"

Or even if I want to trade. I may say, sure, I'll make your website kick ass, but I need you to stain my deck. All of a sudden their website is fine.

Meanwhile, I can build a site for a real client, have my house painted (and my steaks prepared) by professionals and still have more to put in the bank.

So I'm curious. Why is there no reluctance at all from people to mention this sort of thing with computer work?

I might be able to find the answer for you but I will need a virus removed from a laptop as payment. I will make dinner.

Those requests usually come from friends or family. I'm usually happy to do it. If it's just a friend of a friend tell them your rate.

Typically, yes, but I should have mentioned that is part of my point. Groups of friends/families have all sorts of different occupations within them and I just don't hear this going on with anything outside of computer work. Does it?

I typically do, but I am generally curious about the thought process people have with this. Why is it so easy to offer dinner for this line of work but not others?

I don't know. I have friends/family that have skills in the trades (electricians, HVAC, some plumbing)... others have a pickup I can borrow.

I'm not sure what sort of trade-off you have if the skills of friends/family is selling insurance or delivering the mail. Not too much to be gained there.

because they think it's easy and they think your time is not valuable. Also they think all you'll/you'd need is a screwdriver ( so no expense ) -- as a result of all of those - they expect the hookup.

Unless they are a good friend/family, I'd just recommend a novice user buy a mac.

People don't equate mental work with value. They think since it was easy for you to do and didn't involve buying supplies or breaking a sweat it is worthless beyond trivial compensation. My wife cannot understand how I could be exhausted after a day at work just because I sit behind a computer all day. Just the way it goes. At least employers are recognize the value and pay us well.
