After his rookie year, Johnson considering trading Irvin just to acquire draft picks, he felt the team was so bad.

I cannot believe the Vikings GM would be so stupid as to include/overlook language in the trade that would turn those five cut players into first or second round draft picks. That's almost as bad as the owners of the ABA teams that became the NBA giving the owners of the St. Louis Spirits 1/8 of their TV revenue in perpetuity.

When you look at what they ended up spinning all of those picks into, you understand why Belichick tries to maneuver in the draft the way he does; however, he is so completely inept at evaluating personnel that he constantly fills the roster with shitbags.

That is crazy. The trade was when I was very young, so I admit I didn't know much about it. I just knew that in general the Vikings got hosed. What was the language in the trade agreement? From the video, it seemed as the the Vikes brass knew the language, because Jimmy said that when he alerted the Vikings that he was cutting all of the guys, the relationship soured. Allof the picks came from the Vikings, right? None of them were compensatroy type picks from the NFL?

I'm pretty sure that the Vikings just ****ed up and thought that Johnson would just play the players. All the picks were from a team, but other teams' picks ended up in the deal.

It's really unbelievable. How could any GM attach first and second round picks to those role players(as Jimmy Johnson called them)? Then be shocked when they were cut for those picks? Just silly.

I know times have changed, but Draft picks weren't valued any less back then, were they? I would assume they would have been more valued.

And the media. They couldn't have known about the picks, or else they would have immediately been saying that the Vikes were fleeced. I have to assume with how much the media has progressed, that the trade would have been reported entirely differently had it happened today.

Very interesting story all around. They should have done a full E:60 on it. I'd like to know the whole story on it, behind the scenes and everything.

Another big one a few years earlier was the Eric Dickerson trade. Unreal how much teams gave up for RBs in that era.

I read a long article on this. Jimmy Johnson pretty much invented the draft pick value chart. He assigned values to each pick, and no one else in the league was doing that at the time. Now everyone uses it.

Jimmy wasn't just some college coach that won a National Title. He was a revolutionary, and a great GM as well as a great coach. It's really remarkable. He's an egomaniac, but he's earned the right too be in my eyes.
