Mock (10/1)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 8-8 and end up picking #15. All staff is retained.

2. The team fails to extend OLB Justin Houston and has to franchise tag him. Because we are the Chiefs. They do, however, extend S Eric Berry at some point over the next 12 months for about $8-9m a year.

3. The Chiefs re-sign C Rodney Hudson to a 4 year, $12m deal ($4m guaranteed), DE Allen Bailey to a 4 year, $12m deal ($4m guaranteed), and DE Kevin Vickerson to a 2 year, $6m deal.

4. The Chiefs cut TE Anthony Fasano, OLB Tamba Hali, ILB Derrick Johnson, DE Mike DeVito, and CB Sean Smith.

5. The Chiefs tender OLB Josh Martin.

6. The Chiefs let walk WR Junior Hemingway, OT Ryan Harris, OG Jeff Linkenbach, and OG Mike McGlynn.

7. The Chiefs re-sign RB Joe McKnight, FB Anthony Sherman, ILB Josh Mauga, CB Chris Owens, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

8. The Chiefs sign OLB Michael Sam (Cowboys) to a minimal deal.

9. They receive four compensatory picks: a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, and a 6th.

On with the show:

1.15. TE Devin Funchess, Michigan

If there is any one player that best fits what KC likes to do on offense, it's Devin Funchess, a TE/WR hybrid. The Chiefs love heavy TE sets this year, and if that success is sustained, Funchess can replace Fasano with even more dynamism. This will give the Chiefs an offense full of weapons that can grow together over the next few years, as everybody but Avery is under contract long term. Smith, Bowe, Charles, Davis, Kelce, and Funchess, along with Fisher at tackle, Hudson at center, and Fulton at RG.

2.45. CB Marcus Peters, Washington

In this hypothetical, the Chiefs have let their top CBs walk in Sean Smith. Marcus Cooper can work within Sutton's scheme, which is dependent on keeping pressure on the QB. The Chiefs do need one more outside press CB with #1 potential, however, and Peters is the part. A physically gifted, 5'11" corner that plays with great aggression, Peters will need to learn better discipline in the NFL. But he's got 2nd round gem written all over him.

3.75. ILB Eric Kendricks, UCLA

With the departure of DJ, the Chiefs must know that James-Michael Johnson is not the answer. He is a great athlete, and probably a fine backup, but the Chiefs need someone at the position with an elite nose for the ball, great athleticism, and leadership. Kendricks is on pace to lead his team in tackles for a third straight season (he had 150 in 2012), plays with a great emotional edge, and his brother plays ILB in the NFL.

3.96. WR Austin Hill, Arizona

Hill is a 6'3", 211 lb receiver with 4.4 speed. He does have some injury concerns, but those won't scare off Dorsey. And he will need plenty of refinement on running routes and properly using his impressive physique to win on the outside. But again, that won't scare off Dorsey. You're talking about a guy who can become a really, really good #2 in this league.

4.109. CB Byron Jones, Connecticut

Jones is a very lanky corner with some positional flexibility, having played some safety for the Huskies. His more natural position is at corner, however, where he is really more adept at playing bigger, more powerful receivers than he is the faster, quicker WRs.

4.130. FS Jermaine Whitehead, Auburn

Whitehead is a smaller safety than Dorsey typically goes for, but has great speed that can be coached up to cover great swaths of deep field at the FS position.

5.144. DE Anthony Chickillo, Miami

Dorsey steals a move from himself and drafts a bigger 4-3 DE and puts him on a 3-year path to play 3-4 DE, like the Chiefs are doing with Catapano. Chickillo is a really good run defender with an okay passrush.

5.168. OT Daryl Williams, Oklahoma

Williams is a massive, 6'6", 330 lbs road grader with surprising pass protection abilities. You can largely credit it to his fantastic armlength and nimble feet.

6.183. K Jared Roberts, Colorado State

Might be time to explore other options if Santos can't turn it around.

6.202. WR Jaxon Shipley, Texas

Another sibling of an NFL player. Shipley is a shadow of his brother, but does have that same shiftiness that made his brother good in the slot.

7.220. NT Terry Williams, East Carolina

The Chiefs add pure, unadulterated size. At 6'1", 351 lbs, Dontari Poe would no longer be the only 320+ lber on a defense with a 3-4 base.

Don't think Peters is going to be around in the 2nd. Too good of a DB with #1 corner qualities to fall into the 2nd round in next year's draft, even with the slight character concerns. He'll be a 1st rounder like a bunch of former Washington CBs.

Why would KC resign a backup RB with a ruptured achilles tendon in McKnight?

**** that, I want nothing to do with a TE/WR tweener. We need a ****ing prototypical wide receiver. Hell, we need 2 or 3 of them.

Because he'll cost pennies on the dollar, and when he recovers, he is clearly a lethal weapon in this offense.

We'll see as the season goes. I think the Chiefs may have invented something brilliant with the 3 TE sets.

Yup, LBs and safeties can't play physical with them anymore, and we'll be able to run anything from those formations.

Big TEs who can run and catch are the greatest mismatches in this league because there are very few players who can match them in coverage.

If Harris develops, Kelce keeps improving, and we get Funchess (assuming that he gets better and more consistent at the catch point), we could be the 2011 Patriots offense on roids.

Dude, an Achilles injury is life changing for athletes, if by some miracle DJ comes back as it were nothing then we should thank our lucky stars. This injury is the proverbial kiss of death for players who rely on speed and quickness.

I'm familiar with Achilles injuries. It's not the kiss of death. It's the kiss of an extremely difficult rehab that isn't guaranteed to work.

Players have come back from them to play well in all major sports.
