Why are college football teams ranked before the season starts?
Maybe this was discussed at length before in other college football topics, so if it's a Q, then my most sincerest apologies to you and your family.

It seems a bit unfair to have one team be slotted in a better position by some glorified power rankings, particularly in football moreso than basketball.

Wouldn't it make more sense to rank teams after Week 3 or 4 to get a more accurate reading on how teams stack up?

It builds hype, attracts media coverage, helps market the opening week games, etc.

It would make a lot more sense to wait until Week 3 or 4, but you can't stop someone from doing it anyway.

Even dumber are the individual preseason stuff--preseason All-America, preseason All-Big 12 and that nonsense.

I think its unfair in the BCS. If you start off the year higher ranked at the beginning of the year you have a much better chance to stay higher ranked if you keep winning than a lower ranked team. That is the part that is bothersome. If voters could think for themselves it wouldnt matter but they just go, ok Notre Dame was #2 they lost to #22 so we will drop them to #8 at 5-1. Yet some other lower ranked 5-1 team will have better resume, better victories and been more impressive in them.
