Annual "What I Want" Mock

Well, its that time of year again where I put out my "what I want" mock. A few guys around here know that I put these out. Too bad KC doesn't read em... Anyhow, here ya'll go, enjoy...

Round 1 : WR Brandon Cooks : Oregon State

A truly explosive athlete that catches everything. He reminds me of Steve Smith (formerly of Carolina), not DeSean Jackson like people are talking. Despite his shorter frame, he does a really nice job of going up and high-pointing the football. He makes some tough catches in traffic. The time for KC to continue to try to carry on with atrocious receivers needs to come to an end.

How he fits: Adds a true #2 option at WR on the perimeter, and a true playmaker from anywhere on the field. Read that as he's not a slot
receiver.

Round 3 : DE Jackson Jeffcoat : Texas

I really believe that this kid offers unbelievable value in a pass rusher for a football team. I think his knocks are largely unwarranted and if he falls this far he has the potential to make a football team extremely happy. The benefit for Jeffcoat is that he has some time to bulk up and learn from two of the game's best 3-4 OLBs. Any time a scouting report starts with the analyst saying "he's still more potential than production," while that player has 80 tackles, 21 for a loss, 12 sacks, and 18 pressures in a single season as a defensive end in one of college's best conferences, I not only scratch my head but I want to knock the guy in the teeth and tell him he's a flippin' moron. Hell, I'm a moron for writing such a run-on sentence...

How he fits: Depth at OLB and situational pass rusher for 2014 and starter in 2015 when Hali is cut.

Round 4 : OG Trai Turner : Louisiana State

I really, really like this kid as a lineman. He fires off the ball with good pad level and almost always packs the intial punch. He slides and hooks well. I really love the way he climbs the ladder and gets to the second level, taking on multiple defenders to break open a crease. You'd never believe this kid was a Junior when watching his tape. A truly underrated prospect.

How he fits: Will push for the starting job at RG immediately. May push for LG, but I'm not sure how he fits there, thats for the coaches.

Round 5 : CB Phillip Gaines : Rice

I'd very seriously look at him in round 4 and also trading up to get him. Gaines has a great set of tools to work with and with some good coaching could become a starter and a good one. He needs technique work in some areas, but other parts of his game make him look like an early round pick. We'll have to see.

How he fits: Dime defender and special teams gunner as he learns the nuances of the game, shows potential to become a future starter.

Round 6 : DT Jay Bromley : Syracuse

Bromley explodes off the snap of the ball, maintains great pad level, and shoves guards back into quarterbacks. What exactly is there not to love about all of that? If Bromley continues the ascent we witnessed in his Senior year, then he's going to be outstanding.

How he fits: Backup DE and situational pass rushing DT as he develops pro strength.

Round 6 : RB Rajion Neal : Tennessee

I've said before that I really like this kid's skill set and how he could fit into Andy Reid's system, so I'm sticking with it. He could be one of the late gems. I also like to pretend I know something about good running backs.

How he fits: Situational backup RB and receiving option from the backfield.

I think you can do better than Neal at that point, but honestly, I agree that this would be a phenomenal draft.

Love the Cooks, Turner and Gaines picks. Turner in the 4th would be perfect to compete for that RG spot.

If we land Trai Turner, he ain't competing to start at RG. He's going to be the starter at RG.

Phillip Gaines isn't getting out of day 2... but if this were the draft outcome?

Gaines is very likely a 3rd day pick.

He's a hip-pocket defender, but he needs to be completely recoached on everything else.

You don't draft "true #2" receivers in the first round. We already have one named Dwayne Bowe.

Its hard for me to like any mock that doesn't have a safety in ATLEAST the top 4 picks... Abdullah was a pleasant surprise but his best fit is backing up Berry at SS and various uses in sub packages.

Commings hasn't done jack, so counting on him to take over FS without a hitch is a non starter for me... we need an insurance policy to pair with him.

But I do LOVE Cooks at #1, cant complain about that, and you're right, he is Steve Smith 2.0

Cooks racked up yards in either garbage time or against garbage teams. I would be very disappointed if the Chiefs draft him.

I've watched all I need to watch of this guy to be incredibly comfortable feeling like I got value at #1... there are skills that can be taught and there are skills that are God given.

Cooks has the latter, no doubt about it... the weaknesses can be coached up.

He did well in a number of games...but his best games were against crap teams. When he went against teams with good secondaries he disappeared. Oregon and Washington (until the game was over anyway).

He definitely has some good measurables in speed, but I don't think he's worth a 1st round pick..his stats are inflated, imo.

Yeah...

No.

Cooks was an absolute monster this year. In fact, I don't think he "disappeared" at all at any point in the 2013 season.

Boise State, Stanford, Arizona State, Washington and Utah all had defenses ranked in the top 40, Hawaii was #41 and Oregon was #44. The lowest yardage he had against those seven teams was 60 and the highest was 210.

The dude lit shit up and was basically uncoverable all season long.

I like Beckham better, but to say that Cooks stats were inflated against garbage teams is absolutely incorrect.

Yep, and have zero doubt about him being a #1 rec at the next level. This guy is going to produce.
I also think people are going to really be surprised by Bowes production in 2014.
I see a huge year from Bowe. Bank on it.
