Smashed finger with wedding ring on!

What do you do? This might help someone else on here if they are ever this stupid.

It has been quite the 14 hours! Our snow is very wet, and clogged the snow blower. Like an idiot, I stuck my hand down there to unclog it and got the two big fingers on my left hand.

Swelled up bad, and couldn't get my wedding ring off.

Tried to John Wayne it this morning with my cutoff tool, but it wouldn't touch it, and the ring was getting so hot my hand was blistering under and around the ring. I was pretty concerned about the damage that tool could do to flesh if I slipped! Tried a dremel tool, air cutoff tool under water, no luck. It was only scratching the surface.

I finally gave up and was worried about losing the digit if the swelling didn't start going down soon.

Mrs. Hemi then told me it was a tungsten carbide ring she had bought since the diamonds were loose on the gold one. Holy crap, no wonder I couldn't cut it!

She googled the removal instructions and relief! It only took a minute to shatter it with vise grips!

Didn't have to spend 5k at ER, priceless!! Just another adventure.

My wife did that too. Fortunately, it was easy to cut off with a pair of dikes.

wouldn't been kind of cool if you had to chop off the finger. If you had to, you could wear the digit on a necklace.

seriously though; that sucks about the ring. glad you finger didn't fall off.

You wouldn't do that on a tungsten carbide ring. A big set of dykes was my first attempt last night, but it wouldn't even scratch it.

I have cut hardened D2 steel with my cutoff tool without a problem, but it would barely scratch this ring.

That was the last ring to ever be put on my finger while I am alive.

I guess you didn't hear all the warnings about tungsten getting stuck on your finger if you get hurt.

I got a tungsten ring and that's what everyone kept going on and on about.

I like it though because it doesn't wear or get scratched.

Since I left the Army and don’t get a daily dose of safety posters like this (spoiler tagged: graphic) one I’ve gotten in the bad habit of not taking my ring off before wrenching.

Spoiler!

I had no idea it was tungsten carbide, wish I had though as I would have just broken it with the vise grips first thing. It broke into 4 pieces and went flying around the kitchen.

Good for you, real gold is hard to beat!

I think this was my fifth one in the last 41 years. The first one was worn almost through from a motorcycle wreck sliding on the pavement.

Wow. My Dad did something similar to that when he was in the Army.

It's his ring finger on the left hand. They had to do a skin graft from his left thigh.

He has not wore a ring since.

You can break the carbide ring with a hammer if you really need to get it off.

Since I work around electrical gear, I don't wear my ring. Since I cut my wife's off of her finger when she mashed it, she doesn't wear one either.

The vise grips are a little better since they will only close so far, and it was still hard to make myself even do that (thoughts of closing it tight on your finger), let alone a hammer.

But as previously stated, the key is knowing it is tungsten carbide.
