New computer build
My MSI gaming laptop shit the bed a couple nights ago so it's time to build a new desktop pc.
I haven't built one myself in probably 6 years or so. Just looking for some feedback from you computer savvy people before I pull the trigger on this one. Here's what I got http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Grambles/saved/pGLqqs As you can see I'm going with a mini-ITX corsair case and it doesn't have room for an optical drive. Which is fine I don't really need one but as far as loading windows on it I guess I just need to get 8.1 on a flash drive and boot off the flash drive, any tips on that? Oh and it isn't listed on there but I have a 250gb Samsung 850 evo SSD for it also Last edited by DC.chief; 02-02-2015 at 01:34 PM.. |

I'd recommend 16 gigs of RAM and a Samsung EVO 256 gig system drive instead of a WD blue. My new i4790k build boots in about 12 seconds and programs load almost instantly. SSD's are awesome.

Yeah, make sure to get 16 gigs of RAM. Also the 970 has been taking some heat recently because it performs shitty once you hit 3.5 GB of VRAM. Not sure if that matters to you. If it does, the 980 goes to 4 GB.

I'm not a gamer but I used an Asus Z87Pro for my new i4790k and I'm thrilled with the results.

Are you planning on over-clocking? I think you can save a couple of bucks on the memory, the default memory speed should be 1333 or 1600 on the chip you are looking at.

Personally, I don't overclock. Too many issues. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 That's the RAM I chose to use with my Z87 Pro and i4790k. |

No plans to overclock it at the moment but possibly down the road. So I can save maybe 50 bucks going with 1600 ram. Good to know, had no idea it couldn't handle above 1600

No need for a ^40 heatsink/fan if you are not over-clocking it either.

I think you can save a couple hundred by getting a midtower/cheapo mobo but if you have the money and are set on the mini form factor then go for it.
Also not huge fan of SSDs for gaming, I mean it's fine if you're min-maxing but 2x7200rpm drives in RAID0 is cheap as dirt and not a game breaker difference in load times IMO. I also tend to steer clear of the Samsung EVO/PRO series because their firmware has been notoriously shit in the past. |

If your not overclocking, no sense in getting a K series CPU unless you can get it for the same price. (I didnt check) The cooler I would say go for even without the overclock because it will keep temps down on both CPU and inside the case.
Overall it looks like you have a nice, mid level gaming build there, though as voiced above, the 970 is a no go after people have discovered the issues with them. Its been major news for a couple of weeks now. They wont have any value on the secondary market, and pretty soon are going to drop like a rock in retail pricing when inventories start catching up to the distributors since no one is buying them. As for SSD's, they are absolutely a must have in any modern build. Gaming especially. Who wants to wait for load screens when you dont have too? Raid 0 on a regular set of hard drives isnt going to touch SSD load times, think on the order of a 100% improvement from raid (which requires you buy 2 or more drives anyway) to a modern SSD . Just keep your current games on SSD, and games with not much HDD loading or any other games on HDD. edit: didnt see you already had the SSD. Forget them having any problems, that thing is gonna beast. Last edited by hometeam; 02-02-2015 at 08:47 PM.. |

This isnt really a 'gaming' mobo, but it is a good one. not sure what they make in mini ITX without looking, but for this build, almost any quality mobo should do, since we arent overclocking.

Changed the case too. I have two dogs that shed badly and I'm thinking that 380t wouldn't be ideal since it's so open. Idk... New build http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Grambles/saved/nz6Pxr |
