3/25 Surtain update from Miami.com

CHIEFS EYE SURTAIN

Kansas City coach Dick Vermiel is hinting the Chiefs will warm up their talks with the agents for Patrick Surtain and Ty Law in the hope of getting one of those players before the draft.

''We'd like to get one more [free agent]. We'd like to get a corner before we go into the draft,'' Vermiel said. ``We're interested in Surtain, we're interested in Ty Law. There's just a chance. It would all have to fit.''

The Chiefs and the agency representing Surtain, Premier Management, have had conversations in recent days.

A fit with Surtain would have to include a contract averaging approximately $7 million per season with $12 million to $14 million in guaranteed money. The Chiefs also would have to compensate the Dolphins with a ''first-day'' draft pick, meaning Miami is seeking a second- or third-round pick for the Pro Bowl cornerback.

The Chiefs were awarded a third-round compensatory pick (99th overall) by the NFL this week.

Lattimer,

Thanks for the update. A "first-day" draft pick...wonder if this means Miami is softening their stance a bit, or if that's just more speculation to add to debate.

Positive is the Chiefs are engaging. I'm not sold on Law.

Unless we pick up another third in a trade. Could be possible. Trade down in the second and pick up a second third that we give to Miami for Surtain.

I was looking at NFL.com for the rules of compensatory picks and it doesn't really clarify the rule on trading compensatory picks. My guess is you can't because the pick is loss of restricted free agents.

Here is a copy of what NFL.com says when searching for compensatory pick.

"Some teams have more than one pick in a round, and some teams may not have any picks in a round. Picks per team vary because draft picks can be traded to other teams, and the NFL can award additional picks to a team if the team loses players designated as restricted free agents.

The NFL awards compensatory picks based on the net loss of restricted free agents. The limit for compensatory picks is four per team."

I think this is (at least somewhat) encouraging.

It sounds like talks with Miami and Surtain's people are moving forward whereas it was previously indicated that they were stagnant.

If we somehow get Surtain, I'll be doing back flips. Ty Law just seems like too big of a risk to me right now.

While I would love to have Law , I hope we jump on the Surtain deal . I would give up a 2 if we have to. Law is a great play maker and leader and would really help us if he is healthy , but I am not sure if he is so bring on Surtain ! Go Chiefs !!!!

Law is too old and too big an injury gamble. Come on CP, go for Surtain. Do it.

Better than the alternative...

I want Dyson & Hill/Edwards.

I reluctantly accept Surtain [but think it is a financial mistake].

I absolutely do not want Law.
