So, here are my questions...

Let me preface this by reiterating that mega threads suck.

I would much prefer to ask these questions in one of the threads dedicated to the Spagnoulo, but I simply don't have the time to catch up to those.

With that said, I ask, will Spags consistently send 3 guys after the QB and drop 8 into coverage on 3rd and long?

Will he line the DBs 8-10 yards off the LOS in 3rd and short situations?

Will he place any emphasis on fundamentals?

A very basic examination of Sutton vs Spagnuolo.

What the Chiefs defense will look like under new DC Steve Spagnuolo
By: Robert Rimpson | January 25, 2019 12:00 am

Now that the Chiefs have made it official that Steve Spagnuolo will be Kansas City’s new defensive coordinator, we can start to speculate what the team’s defense will look like under the new DC.

To start, we have to acknowledge that Spagnuolo is the complete opposite of Bob Sutton in so many different ways. Spagnuolo runs a 4-3 base defense while Sutton liked to primarily run a 3-4 base defense. Spagnuolo has a tendency to call blitzes often and Spagnuolo’s specialty is defending the run, so this is pretty much the opposite of what the Chiefs saw with Sutton in 2018.

Let’s start with the obvious and most glaring difference, which is Spagnuolo running a base 4-3 under. This would mean there three linebackers on the field behind four down linemen, whereas with Sutton’s 3-4 there were two inside linebackers, three down linemen, and two outside rushers. Adding another linebacker on the field should theoretically help defend the run and it could lead to some pretty exotic blitzes.

The drawback would be that you’re losing the ability to drop your outside rushers into coverage like you can in a 3-4, which helps defend the pass better, at least in theory. That practice led to a lot of frustration in K.C., though. Watching great pass rushers like Justin Houston or Dee Ford drop back into coverage confused and angered many Chiefs fans, so it’s likely no one will miss seeing that.

Model of Chiefs’ personnel in 4-3 defense

For the most part, a lot of the Chiefs’ current defensive roster could easily fit in a 4-3. Derrick Nnadi and Chris Jones would take the defensive tackle spots, with Nnadi playing the 1-technique and Jones the 3-technique. You could have Ford, Houston or Breeland Speaks (who seems like he was built to be in a 4-3) in as defensive ends. Ford would make the most sense at the weakside spot as the pass-rushing specialist. This is the even side of the line (away from the in-line TE). For the Chiefs, the linebacker position is where things could get tricky.

Anthony Hitchens would be comfortable in the 4-3, as that is what he played while in Dallas. In fact, he played all three (Will, Mike, and Sam) linebacker positions with the Cowboys, so you could stick him in any LB position. Dorian O’Daniel could play the Will or Sam positions, as that would allow him to chase the running back often which is ideal for a player with his speed. The trouble is who that third linebacker would be. Reggie Ragland could play that third role, but he struggled while he was in Buffalo when they switched to a 4-3. If Spagnuolo wants to run Ford and Speaks as his defensive ends, then he could usa Houston at Sam linebacker, which sounds asinine until you realize that Houston is talented enough to play any front-seven position.

The Chiefs also could add some pieces in free agency and the draft that could potentially bump any one of these players from starting. There’s no guarantee that Dee Ford will be back in 2019, but others could also see their departure if the team feels they no longer fit the scheme.

Now that the front seven is taken care of, the question is how aggressive Spagnuolo will be. In 2016, his last full season as a DC, he blitzed on around 22 percent of his plays. That doesn’t seem like that much, until you see that Sutton only blitzed on around 15 percent of his plays during the 2016 season. In 2018, Sutton only blitzed on 18 percent of his defensive plays.

On paper, Spagnuolo should be able to do these things as DC almost immediately: Improve the run defense exponentially, run a scheme that most Chiefs players fit in, and most importantly be more aggressive. These were all things Chiefs fans felt the defense lacked in 2018, and it seems we now have the perfect antithesis to the Sutton problem.

Another one that talks about the type of guys he likes. Doesn't bode well for Ragland.

It's back from 2015, but it still talks about his scheme and his preferences when he went back to the Giants.

Long article

Spoiler!

I think this is a fine thread. Megathreads should be fought at every opportunity. It could use a better title though.

1.-NO. by all accounts besides some posters who wanted someone else and therefore hate the hire, Spagnuolo is a pressure junkie. Creative blitz packages, sometimes sending safeties and corners. 4 man line means pretty much never rushing 3, his most famous defense that beat the Pats and denied them their perfect season featured a '4 aces' rush package of 4 DE's... Preaches confusing QB's pre-snap reads, mixing cover 2, 3, and man without telegraphing the call pre-snap.

2. No again, apparently. He is called 'aggressive' in every article I find. That's not aggressive.

3. He is described as a very hands-on, detail oriented coach, so yes, that should be the case.

Now, be prepared for all the Rex Ryan fans, and the guys who wanted to hire Tony Romo, or Kris Richard who wasn't going anywhere to pipe in with how shitty he is.
