Hacksaw Ridge

Anybody watch it yet? Mel Gibson's latest. My wife and I watched it tonight. I thought it was pretty badass and told Desmond Doss' story pretty well. The end of it bugged me, feeling like it ended shorter than it should have. I did just read Bill Sloan's Battle of Okinawa and watched a documentary on Desmond Doss. So that helped in understanding Desmond and the battle.

It did a great job depicting how horrid the battle of Okinawa was, focusing on just one of the many ridges/hills of the land. I thought Andrew Garfield did a good job playing the main character.

What's everyone's thoughts? Couldn't find a thread for it after searching several months back. I could've sworn there was a thread for it.

Go see it. I could've sat through it again. Our theater was about 3/4 full. For anyone into true War movies, it's a must see.

Showing some footage of Desmond Doss at the end was a nice touch as well.

WW2 movies are the best. You can watch them without feeling dirty. Any other war is like WTF are we over there getting our boys killed in the first place.

Finally watched this last night. I cant believe this shit was being compared to Saving Private Ryan. More than half the film was a goddamned chick-flick love story. They threw in a few ultra-gory war scenes to try and even it out but it didnt help. Not to mention the terrible acting. One of the biggest disappointments Ive ever had to sit through. 4/10

Agreed. I turned it off after about 45-mins. Horrible chick-flick movie.

.... this guys knows what's up.

There certainly seems to be some polar opposite reviews for it...

Depends how you view the difference between a true story and a made up story

What Desmond Doss did, all by himself on that ridge... is absolutely superhuman, and lets not sleep on the battle scenes either, they're as good as anything in SPR (other than maybe the beach scene), IMO

I agree about Doss being a hero. But him being a real life hero doesn't make his movie better than SPR.

It wont be mentioned in the same breath as SPR very often, but it was definitely a critical and box office hit

Hollywood let Mel Gibson back into the club for it, thats gotta count for something

Apparently they toned down Doss's real life heroics in the movie because they would have seemed too unbelievable to modern audiences.

Oh, and as far as Saving Private Ryan goes, the beginning and ending were amazing, but the middle kind of dragged. If I was to rewatch it I'd probably skip over about half of it now.
