Middletown HS Coach Resigns After Receiving Death Threats Following 1-19 Tenure
"The online death threats, threats of physical violence, personal and deceitful attacks from parents and community members, and verbal abuse leveled against myself, my family, and my coaching staff have devolved into an unsafe environment which I refuse to tolerate. These threats of physical harm and verbal abuse stem from the misguided community perspective on the irrational importance on winning high school football games, unrealistic expectations from parents related to their son's abilities and future prospects, and parental belief that bullying coaches is an acceptable method of communication. I understand the high-profile nature and acceptable criticism associated with being the head football coach at Middletown High School, however, winning and losing at the high school level should not be a life-threatening situation."

I wonder what the endgame of this stuff is. At some point, it seems like schools would shut down programs because they can't hire referees and coaches. Or perhaps there's a neverending line of people who think that coaching would be fun.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why people sign on as youth sports referees. I have no interest in getting villainized, threatened, and yelled at for minimum wage.

Just saw a story about HS referees getting threats. They are quitting in record numbers.
In the movie "The Game Stands Tall" Remember-it is just a HS football game.

Heh, my HS FB team had two 0-10 seasons in a row. Couple guys I was on the debate team even started an underground school newspaper to dog on them for all the funding they got without any results. That went over well.
Most here know how that turned out in the end. |

part of this goes back to recruiters who start looking into kids in middle school. Not that any kid on this team had that problem, but parents that treat HS sports as the most important thing in the world certainly need a reality check.

Having played QB on a horrible HS team myself, I recognize in hindsight that it was possibly the most significant character building exercise of my life.
You learn that some of the bad things that happen to you are outside of your control, and you have to push through and affect the things you have in your ability to change. Blaming others gets you nowhere. It has helped me to weather adversity in my professional life. If I had played on a winning team, I would have learned instead to take success for granted, and wouldn't fully appreciate it. Today's youth expect success with minimal effort, and blame failure on others. They are incapable of intraspection. |
