Rainbows and Unicorns in LA & San Diego

5 reasons L.A. will knock off the Chiefs

Five reasons L.A.’s Chargers* (0-2) will knock off the Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) on Sunday in Carson:

1. Keenan Allen is up to speed. Allen was too slick for the Chiefs last year, catching six passes in less than a full half. “They couldn’t cover him,” Philip Rivers said. However, after Allen blew out his right knee, the Chiefs rallied to win. San Diego was 0-5 against the Andy Reid-coached Chiefs when Allen was injured, 2-1 when he went the whole game.

2. L.A. will give its pass game more leeway. The hot stretches versus Miami last week ought to have reminded the new head coach this team is built to pass the ball. Allen, who had three drops and a touchdown in the opener, was sharper last week, and Hunter Henry had seven catches in seven targets after never getting a pass in the opener.

3. They’re fed up with Marcus Peters. Team Spanos seems to detest the talkative All-Pro cornerback. Peters jawed with Allen, Rivers and blocker Orlando Franklin (no longer with the team) last September, and Allen called him a bum on Twitter. With an 0-4 record against K.C. since Peters arrived, is it time to transform contempt into victory?

4. Pass rushers make plays. End Melvin Ingram is off to the best start of his career. He dominated at Denver and had a big-time sack Sunday, beating agile tackle Laremy Tunsil for a red-zone sack, in 2.1 seconds. Joey Bosa faced the Chiefs only once as a rookie, in the San Diego finale at Jack Murphy Field. He whipped blockers at two tackle spots. In response, Reid parked a third tackle at H-back, near the tackle opposite Bosa. That’s r-e-s-p-e-c-t, sans shouting.

5. Chiefs are good, not great. The great Week 1 win over the Pats led pundits to coronate K.C. as the league’s best team. Whipping the Eagles in the second half Sunday amplified the applause. Theory: Since history affirms Reid is very good when given extra time to prepare, e.g., at New England, he has less on his curveball once the normal schedule resumes. Also, Sunday’s win overshadowed that Chiefs lines – especially the blockers -- were outplayed in the first half, and that safety Eric Berry’s season-ending injury in Week 1 was a big blow.

We're going to need more than two passing third down conversions to win this.

It doesn't matter how we get our 3rd down conversions, as long as we are getting them. I would rather be 8/10 on 3rd down and every one of them be by running than to be 6/10 on 3rd down and 5 of them be by the pass. I swear Clay. You are so wrapped up in being critical of Smith, that you are becoming absolutely nonsensical.

I hope they go straight after Marcus Peters. Peters doesn't have a pick yet and if they beat him it will bring him down to Earth.

Chiefs are only at 39.1% third down conversion percentage so far for the year...third down has been the glaring weakness for the team the last couple of weeks.

That's why the Jets haven't won their division. They just aren't fed up with Tom Brady yet.

Not really, no.

3rd down conversions have been a problem for our offense for the last few years.
