Mock (12/11)

Assumptions:

1. Chiefs finish 12-4, winning the 2nd seed and a first round bye. The Ravens come to town and the Chiefs outlast them, 25-22. The Chiefs visit Foxborough against the Patriots for the AFCCG, where they ultimately lose, 35-13. The Chiefs have the 28th pick in the draft. Alex Smith, Andy Reid, and John Dorsey are all retained.

2. OLB Tamba Hali retires. ILB Derrick Johnson does not retire, and will return like Justin Houston did this week.

3. RB Jamaal Charles renegotiates a contract down to 2 years, $4m; P Dustin Colquitt renegotiates his contract down to 2 years, $5m.

4. NT Dontari Poe is franchised.

5. DE Allen Bailey is traded for a 3rd rounder in 2018. It does not net any picks in 2017.

6. S Eric Berry is re-signed for 4 years, $44m ($19m guaranteed).

7. The following players are brought back on minimum deals: DE Kendall Reyes

8. The Chiefs tender the following players: FB Trey Millard, WR Albert Wilson, S Daniel Sorensen, K Cairo Santos, LS James Winchester.

9. The following players walk in free agency: QB Nick Foles, RB Knile Davis, OG Mike Person, DE Jarvis Jenkins

10. The following players are cut: FB Anthony Sherman, TE Ross Travis, OLB Frank Zombo, ILB Terrance Smith, CB Kenneth Acker

12. The Chiefs sign CB Prince Amukamara (Jaguars) for 3 years, $20m ($8m guaranteed).

11. The Chiefs bring in 4 compensatory picks: a 4th (Sean Smith), a 5th (Chase Daniel), and two 6ths (Donald Stephenson & Tyvon Branch).

On with the show:

1.28. NT Vita Vea, Washington

John Dorsey's success in drafting and building depth has been spending high round picks at areas the Chiefs may soon have to let players walk. Poe and Howard could both walk after this season -- meaning a body-swallowing NT is necessary in the near future. The Chiefs like T.J. Barnes but he's more of a backup. Vea gives them the blue-chip talent at the position that is badly needed.

2.60. OT/G Roderick Johnson, Florida State

The Chiefs eschew replacing Smith sooner than later, and instead opt to Make Their Trenches Great Again. Johnson gives them a talented technician with some ability to play any position along the line, and is going to be a much needed talent infusion if both LDT and Fulton walk after the season.

3.91. OG Scott Quessenberry, UCLA

Again, the Chiefs have essentially surrendered the line of scrimmage all year when on offense. Quessenberry has NFL blood in his family, which Dorsey and Reid love, and is better than his brother who entered the NFL a couple years back. The Chiefs need to be deep and strong along the line of scrimmage.

Chiefs fans, and Planeteers especially, will hate this draft. But they probably hate the fact we haven't run the ball for shit in 2016, too.

4.127. QB Cooper Rush, Central Michigan

A strong, powerful QB who is going to need a lot of developmental time. I don't think Rush is the next big thing, but I don't think the next big thing is in this draft. Rush comes from a program Dorsey trusts and boasts enough ability for the Chiefs to take a flyer.

4.133 (compensatory). RB Corey Clement, Wisconsin

The more I watch this upcoming RB class, the more convinced I am the Chiefs may wait until the middle rounds to take one. The RB talent is re-****ing-diculous this year. Clement is a bellcow who would emerge as the #1 back should Ware go down at some point in 2017.

5.166. OLB Ejuan Price, Pittsburgh

Price is a pure passrusher, and that's about all he is. The Chiefs need depth at passrusher with only Dadi Nicholas on the team behind Houston/Ford, but the Chiefs turned Ford, who was a one-dimensional speed rusher, into a well-rounded talent.

5.173 (compensatory). TE Michael Roberts, Toledo

A huge, physical tight end at 6'5", 270 lbs. His hands are solid but mostly this is about upgrading the four-deep TE squad we have.

6.204 (compensatory). ILB Ben Gedeon, Michigan

6.210 (compensatory). ILB Tyus Bowser, Houston

The Chiefs made some investments and test out some bodies while they start Mauga/Wilson and wait for DJ to return.

7.250. CB Ashton Lampkin, Oklahoma State

Chiefs kick the tires on a high-upside option out of OSU.

I'm not trying to hate, I really enjoy reading your posts....but why are you hellbent on the Allen Bailey trade? I've seen you mention it three or four times now.

ILB should be a higher priority.

Dylan Cole, Missouri St., is an interesting prospect for ILB. Played OLB at Missouri St. but NFL Draft Scout lists him as a conversion possibility to ILB in the NFL. Very fast for the position and very productive at the FCS level. I'm wondering what Chiefs fans familiar with Missouri St. think of him.

Yes, I agree. I seriously doubt Bailey would net a 3 coming off a muscle tear. I think he finishes out his contract with us. I also don't think Anthony Sherman is going anywhere.

There would also be zero money saved trading Bailey, it's more realistic Poe isn't back than Bailey isn't.

I was thinking more of Tyrone Crowder and Zach Banner at guard. Make teams run around a combined 700 pounds of beef.

Keep Bailey, move Howard to NT and let Poe walk.

He's freekishly athletic, but he's fairly small. I dunno that he could put on that much weight to play inside.

He's a super kid though. My wife coached volleyball at his high school here in the springfield area and was around him alot. Great kid.

I like Allen Bailey, but in my scenario, we're keeping Dontari Poe.

If we keep Poe, Bailey or Howard become tradeable because we need to start Chris Jones.

I want to see how Cole does at the Combine or at least at the East/West or Senior Bowl before I declare him "freakishly" athletic. He's way more athletic than his FBS competition, but that doesn't mean too much.

I like him, but at this point he's a late-round flyer at best, and probably more of a 4-3 OLB. But I'm open minded on him for now.

I agree with you on Sherman, actually. These mocks I do are typically me just wrestling with different perspectives and opportunities.

As for Bailey, however, I do think he'll net a 3 provided he clears medically. An effective three-down DE is invaluable in the NFL.

Hell, if it wasn't for the injury, he'd net a 2.
