My rankings:
Asheville - Nice classic old house from 1849. It's not enormous but is still pretty huge, and it's got a good location near a grocery store and restaurants. Plus, Asheville seems like a nice town. The big downside is that there appears to be no access to parks or trails nearby. Brasstown - Man, this house really nails it. Great design, great colors, nice views, and on 70+ acres. I could really like this house. The big challenge is that it's five miles or so outside of town, so you can't walk to anything, but you could probably do a bike or something. It's hard to vote for this over Asheville's access and location, but it's really, really close. On another day, I could easily rank this first. Raleigh - This house is pretty similar overall to Charlotte. Putting the obvious out first, it has no curb appeal at all, though a little landscaping would help. The interior is so-so. It's very nicely located near services, but again there's no park access. Why does North Carolina hate parks? It has a little more urban appeal to me than Charlotte. Charlotte - Another very nice house in terms of design. It's out in the 'burbs, but oddly, if you can walk across a little stretch of woods you can get to a strip mall that has a Wendy's and some other food. I could live here, but the house doesn't dominate like Brasstown and location doesn't dominate like Asheville. Like Asheville, there seems to be no good park or trail access. New Bern - Nice house, and the river access opening to the ocean, along with national forest proximity, is nice. However, it's not a convenient location to services and the house isn't as dominating as some of the others. It looks like I could boat across to some great trail running, which isn't convenient but is nice.

What makes it first? If you like it, it seems like you'd also like Brasstown.
Brasstown really intrigues me. I wonder what the local population is like. It's a little bit Appalachia.

Asheville is really cool town of about 85,000 people near the Blue Ridge Mountains. A lot of East and West coast Hipsters have been moving there over the last ten years driving up the price of real estate.

Asheville, NC is in my top 5 places I'd be willing to move to. All of the houses are nice but the location for Asheville gets the win easily..

Great entry way, nice curb appeal, fun backyard, but the ocean access is what puts it over the to. I like the brasstown bar/family room better, but the ocean wins with me. There is some great fishing in that area and the convenience of that set up would be awesome.

Asheville would be an attractive location.
The Charlotte house is very similar to a house we looked at earlier this year, except the house we looked at did not have a green river, pool, or gazebo in the backyard. It also did not have the in-law suite. The finishes were also dated and the price was well under half of this house. In the end it didn't make sense for us to more than double our square footage and become house poor at this stage of our life. |

New Bern for water access although 70 acres in Brasstown was tempting.
