Unreal Estate Game: Southeast Florida

Assume that you idly buy a state lottery ticket while getting a doughnut at 7/11, and voila! You're a winner! You win your choice of one the five houses that will be shown.

I'll give you five houses in a state, and you vote on the house you would take.

Background rules:

Assume that your job situation won't need to change - you can find an identical job or work from home or whatever, so jobs don't matter.

Consider the house itself and the location and anything else that's important to you (schools, restaurants, lot size, etc.). Feel free to do a google map search to check out the neighborhood and the area.

You cannot sell the home. You can live in it as long as you like, but when you move out, it reverts back to the state as a prize for a future winner.

All houses will generally be in the $900,000 to $1 million price range.

All maintenance and utilities and taxes are cost-neutral compared to your current home.

If you wouldn't move into any of these homes, you can instead accept a cash prize of $50,000 (tax free).

Today's state is the extreme southeastern region of Florida. Here are your five houses:

Fort Lauderdale - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...8_M62963-40083

Islamorada - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...ex=FL619356362

Key West - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...0-09085#photo0

Miami - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...2-04178#photo0

Plantation - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...4_M56575-33594

My rankings:

#1 - Miami - Helluva location. Let me repeat that. Helluva location. The unit itself isn't hugely impressive, but it's quite nicely sized, and that's a helluva location. Besides the views, you can walk past women in bikinis to convenient restaurants and a grocery store. I initially didn't think this would impress me, but the location is similar to Key West and it's got advantages of size and views. But what the heck is Photo 21?

#2 - Fort Lauderdale - I suspect that this house will be underrated, but the more you look, the better it gets. The house is pretty good-sized, and it's really convenient to all sorts of shopping and stuff. There's a Starbucks and a bunch of restaurants just a few blocks away, and you can also easily walk to the beach and all of its services. This is a really awesome house. It's just taking on a juggernaut with the Miami Beach high-rise. If the Miami beach high rise was 300 or 400 square feet smaller, I'd take Fort Lauderdale in a heartbeat.

#3 - Key West - There's something really cool about living in Key West. It's essentially the Caribbean. This location is pretty close to the main drag with restaurants and entertainment, and you'd likely not even have a car. Just take a bike everywhere or walk. The unit's small and not fancy, but it has personality. My big concerns are noise from the condo neighbors and whether living in a resort area would get old. But I'm willing to give it a try.

#4 - Plantation - It's a pretty big house, and you can drive your boat to the ocean via the canals or whatever they're called. The style doesn't speak volumes to me, but it's big and it's reasonably aesthetic. It's not really convenient to any services, though, which knocks it down in my book.

#5 - Islamorada - It's a slightly bigger unit than Key West, and it's a single family home so you don't have noise issues. It's not a hugely impressive home, though, and I don't need boat access. It's not near anything so you'd have to drive everywhere. I'll pass on this one, even though it would be cool for a vacation or something.

The only way I am ever going to Florida again is January/February when it is -5 in Minnesota. So it will be 65 in Fla. That damn humidity is just not worth it.

If key West would have been a house rather than a condo, I would have went that direction.

But yeah, Plantation is amazing. I'll take that one, please and thank you. Fort Lauderdale would be a fine consolation prize.

If I were independently wealthy and in my 20's, I'd take that spot in Miami in a heartbeat.

I gotta say, the voting on this one surprises me. I figured Miami and Key West would lead the pack.

Honestly, Key West is a disappointment. Nice enough place, but if I'm dropping a cool mil, I want a little more than what looks to be an incredibly average looking apartment. I know it's Key West and all, but come on. Key West is within driving range of Plantation, I'm betting. I'll be happy to visit there.

And like I said, if I were some trust fund baby just getting out on my own in my mid 20's or so, Miami would be the spot.
