Chiefs Talk me out of my pessimism.

I've read a few threads this forum, and the general consensus has been pretty optimistic around these parts.

I feel a bit pessimistic, and it has nothing to do with Alex Smith, who I actually think is a good quarterback.

My problem stems from the wide receiver position. It's been three years of Dorsey and we still haven't landed a good #2 receiver. And you need two receivers to win in this league.

My concern is at guard. Ehringer and Duvarney-Tardif aren't inspiring at the position.

My concern is at OLB, where both of our passrushers are injured and Dee Ford is a question mark.

My biggest concern is secondary, however. We have one excellent corner and two excellent safeties. Beyond that, the depth is worrying (I'm guessing it was for Dorsey, too, since he drafted three DBs). Gaines and Russell are good talents but neither seems like a true #2. Our safety depth has been robbed, seeing how we've let so much safety talent walk the past couple years. We can't spin gold into straw forever, can we?

Just some thoughts I have. I invite you to give me reasons to hope.

I'm also worried about the secondary. I think we can make do until Houston gets back IF Hali is still performing at a good level, and Ford takes a step forward (both big question marks). I think we will be ok as far as receivers go. I think we're set to stop the run, but it's a pass happy league now. And to me the secondary is our biggest concern.
I think o line will be better than it has been in a while. May not be great because of our guards, but hopefully Fish, Schwartz and Morse can help make those spots a little better.
I was a little worried about backup qb, but I think we're fine now.

If you worry about making every single position neat and tidy for one single year you risk painting yourself into a corner and mortgaging future years.

I agree that #2 CB could be a concern, especially short-term. Letting SS walk gives us a little flexibility in the future. If Gaines can fill that role in any competent way I think KC is in great shape.

Ford still has stuff to prove. He has shown flashes, and I have been a supporter of him since the beginning so I certainly can't jump off now. Still it's understandable to be a little iffy about what that position is if Houston doesn't get back into form. I think the reality is though that Houston will get into form, and pretty quickly.

The WR #2 spot is similiar to the CB spot. It's a spot where a young guy needs to step up. He doesn't have to be the 2nd option, just a threat over the top and a good 3rd option to keep the defense honest. That isn't asking too much and I think Conley is capable of at least being that in his career, worst case scenario. Lets hope it starts this year.

Dorsey is well aware of these positions, considering the amount of moves he has put into CB and WR the past two years. Next year it will be another position. That is just going to be reality, and TBH, I think it's fun to watch. If young guys step up at CB, WR, and G, the sky is the limit.

You have three excellent receivers. Only one of them plays WIDE receiver. So what? Patriots rode Edelman and Gronk to a Super Bowl.

Chiefs should be a very good team this year. I think they win the AFC West, and then it all comes down to the usual luck variables -- health heading into the playoffs, who got the bye, and home field advantage, etc.
