Life Tracing WWII in Letters Home

I know many of you like American History like I do. This link is personal for me, because I know the family involved well. William McGraw was a City Councilman in Independence. He had three sons; Dan, who worked for the City, Mike, who is a Pulitzer Prize winning writer for the Kansas City Star, and Tim, who is one of my best friends from high school and now is a property manager and night house manager for the Freight and Salvage Music Venue in Berkeley, CA.

Before Tim's mom passed away, I used to go over and help her with computer problems. Tim lived in California and set up all her computer stuff (all Macs) and I'm a Mac guy, so she'd call me if she needed help. And she'd give me cookies and was just the nicest little old lady in the world.

The McGraws are exceptional people. I'm proud that they've been my neighbors and friends.

That brings back memories of my Father as well (a WWII vet). A greater generation of Men, we will never know.

Excellent read! Just finished watching a documentary on the Nazi's confessions after the war. Even as the Russians and Allies closed in on Berlin, people thought that Hitler would save them. He was using old men and boys to fight as his regular army was ordered to scorch the earth (Germany) just ahead of advancing forces.

They had such little remorse for what they had done to the world. At one point they were sending as many as 2000 victims to the gas chamber per hour. When you times this by the number of camps it is mind blowing. Industrial death.

The 1940s were a much more gentlemanly time.
William was sending letters home to his wife, and had no idea if he'd ever make it home to see her again. Pretty powerful stuff.
