Football Vince Wilfork has asked Patriots for his release

Nose tackle Vince Wilfork's 10-year run in New England could be coming to an end soon.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Wilfork has asked the Patriots to grant his release, according to sources.

Wilfork is due $7.5 million in 2014 with a salary-cap hit of $11.6 million. Patriots brass approached Wilfork about restructuring his contract, but the defensive tackle wasn't interested.
The five-time Pro Bowl player "absolutely plans" on playing in the NFL next season.

so wait why would they cut him if he gives them an 11 million cap hit. they cant do anything with it anyway because there wont be any cap relief. it would just being giving a player away to their competition (Denver)

Actually think that Knighton is better than him at this point in his career. Though the two of them together on that Denver line with Ware and Miller on the outsides . . . Shit.

Sounds like they can save $8M of the cap hit by releasing him. Question is - since they appear to be not interested in keeping him for 11.6M against the cap, are they willing to be without him for 3.6M against the cap?

He's 32 and coming off Achilles surgery. The Pats are painfully unsentimental about paying players not for what they've already done but what they'll do now and tomorrow. There's no way they were going to pay him that old salary. He'll probably get some crap team to pony up, and will ride out the last few years being unspectacular but decent on a 4-12 team.
