If you do bike tours into the inner parts of the island, watch out for the koalas.
I'm serious. When I was in Maui in high school, my dad and I went on a bike trip through the island. Years ago they transported eucalyptus trees and planted them on the island because... I don't know. Why the **** not, I guess. But then in order to survive, eucalyptus trees need koalas to prune them. So we were told we'd be riding through this large grove of eucalyptus trees. The guide passed out the helmets, and there were a bunch of scratches on them. Kind of foreboding, but we assumed it's from people wiping out. Not the way we thought. We got to the edge of the grove, and the guide stops us and says, "The koalas are up in the trees, and they sleep most of the day. Occasionally they'll lose control while sleeping and fall out of the trees. Just be watchful." Everybody laughs at him, because that's adorable. Sleepy little koalas falling out of trees. And to "watch out" for them. Hah. Yeah, let's watch out for the fuzzy killer rabbit, too. But sure enough, we're riding through, and all of a sudden, WUMP! This huge koala hits this lady on the back like a piano falling from a 10-story building. She goes down to the ground. Immediately. I would have laughed, but I was too freaked out. If we hadn't stalled for just a second more, that would have been me getting raped by a koala bomb from the sky. |

We are leaving the 76 degree weather in Orange County for Maui is a couple of weeks. The whales should be very active this time of year.
I recommend the whale watching trips, Molokini, Haleakala. The road to Hana is very long and windy. I attempted it on a trip 20 years ago and never again on my 8 visits since. |

I did a little piece of that road. I would probably spend my time another way than going around blind curves on one lane roads.

Don't listen to the pussies in this thread. Rent a convertible and do the road to Hana. Stop at all the recommended sight seeing places and hike to the falls. It will take a full day.
Snorkeling at Molokini is great. Sunset dinner cruise. Go to the Old Lahaina Luau. Take a whale watching tour. Sunrise bike ride down Haleakala. |
