Yeah but I don't think you saw the focus on the running game last year like you are this year. Could just be me not remembering much of last year but it just seems like we are running more and with power.

Protecting the football, clock chewing drives, stout defense, getting bounced in the first round...it appear so.

They seriously need to put a white board next to his ass and make sure he at no point goes about throwing the ball 55% of the time. He needs a clock management coach and a you are throwing the ball too damn much coach. |

When you have Charles, Davis and DAT....playing Martyball is a must.
But Reid will throw on downs that are 2nd or 3rd n short and it just pisses me off to no end when I watch this team. This team needs to run to set up the pass. Not the other way around.

I wouldn't call it "Marty ball", more like "safe gameplan". The Jets, The Dolphins, and The Rams are all teams that aren't going to "torch you" in the air. All three, to an extent, are running teams, or were built to be running teams at the beginning of the season. The only real outlier is the Rams who have all but committed to the pass now out of necessity. Its a pretty cautious, pragmatic game plan, and the rate at which Alex is getting the ball out of his hands in these games makes me think of a different coach.
What have we been doing all year? Slowly, but surely moving the ball down the field. We don't have a great many "big plays" but we have enough 3rd down conversions and clock control to make you sweat a little. You know what that makes me think of? Hank Stram's "Matriculate the ball down the field" approach. Granted, we're looking at a completely different revision of that methodology here, namely through the pass, but it seems as of lately, or maybe I've just now started to notice it more since that Bronco game, that we are really putting a huge emphasis on getting every yard that we can and just moving forward. It was either the Charger game or the Patriot game where we just didn't really take a shot down the field and there were some guys that were just open for days but Alex was getting the ball out quick and not taking a chance on routes that needed to develop. It was just bing, bang, boom, get the ball up the field, run the clock down, get every point we possibly can on the board, and play rock solid defense. Some might also consider that Marty ball, and I don't think I'd disagree with that, it just doesn't "feel" like Marty ball felt. It "feels" like what I think Stram-ball would have felt like, in a sense. I just wasn't alive to know any different than just Marty ball, but that Adage of matriculation rings home with this offense. |

There are like 6 or 7 teams with 5 wins right now. Good coaching/play calling is the type of thing that can decide if we make the playoffs or not...

We got away from the run a bit in the 4th Q. But I think that was Andy just kind of toying around and trying to work on some things for the future.
Alex really only needs to throw the ball 25-30 times a game. IMO the days of 35+ passes should be nearing the end based on the way our team is built right now. |

My guess is Andy is just playing to the strengths of the team for right now. Which is a good thing but he will try to get different pieces for the O to make it a little more pass happy in the years to come.

The Seahawks last year played suffocating defense, rarely gave up the big play, never turned the ball over, converted 3rd downs and played outstanding special teams. And yes, alex Smith is playing better than Russell Wilson this year, so let's just not go there. This isn't about the qb. This is about the style.
