Apple TV is shit and **** all their proprietary Home Sharing/AirPlay overpriced bullshit. Just get a smart TV that can stream DLNA and be done with it. Virtually no reason to get an AppleTV unless you're an Apply fanboy..

Disagree with everything in that^
Love the Apple TV. Have a MacBook and use the mirror function all the time. Have all the photos from my library streamed on it. Netflix, hbo go etc.. Only complaint is the tiny ass remote |

I got a really good deal on it so I'm not heavily invested.

Airplay is sweet for music as well. I have a Gbox running Xbmc, but my brother has an Apple TV. The apple is pretty flawless as far as reliability and performance in comparison to my gbox (though I can do much much more with the gbox). One of our favorite things is taking it on family vacations. When we get in from the beach everyone streams their pics and videos from the day onto it. We just leave a slideshow running in the background of pics all the time. My brother has a GoPro as well so that's fun to watch.

If you have any mac product made after 2010 (I don't... ) the mirroring is awesome.

A jailbroken AppleTV is all I use for entertainment. I can watch nearly anything. But it's due to it being jailbroken which allows a bunch of extra features. The newest AppleTV 3 cannot be jailbroken though.

Regardless of jail breaking, you'll be able to get to anything you've got in iTunes and can push any video that will play on your iPhone or iPad to your TV.
If you run into format issues, I recommend using Air Video to transcode on the fly. |

I've got a Roku in my bedroom that I love. Tons of free channels and of course subscription services.
Alot of the free channels are pretty cheesy though. Like old kung fu and horror flicks from the 70s. I've been wanting to try an Apple TV box out. Posted via Mobile Device |

We love ours. Use it mostly for music and YouTube vids.
The remote does suck though. There is an app for iPhone/iPad that's way better...never use the included remote!!!! |
