I have a really serious question I need answered.
I would like a reasonable explanation of why baseball players ALL have to have something in their mouth to chew on ALL the time. It's something that just really annoys me. When they show any player at any time they are either spitting or blowing out sunflower seeds.

I don't know of any other sport that it's even comparable. Basketball, hockey, Football.

Basketball and hockey are played on a court and football requires a mouthguard but that's all I can think of . WHY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could be way off base with this, but it's my rationalization: they grew up fans of baseball players, they emulate their heroes as kids, chewing gum or sunflower seeds until it became second nature to play while chewing/spitting. Chewing/spitting is as engrained in them, while playing, as are the talents they have honed, to achieve the success they have.

Repeat the cycle for several generations, it just becomes the way it is.

Seems legit

There is a LOT of downtime in baseball and the season is 162 (I think) games long. So they started chewing tobacco (or smoking in the dug out) for something to do. Now seeds and gum have taken their place...
