Question for the tech savvy folks

I have a question for those who are tech savvy here. I currently have 2GB fiber installed in my home, yet get a fraction of that (~ 100Mb on a good day). Spent an hour with the ISP tech support (Metronet for those who have heard of it) and verified that they are not the issue with my speeds. It looks like it is my router (TP Link Deco XE 75 Pro). I spoke with the TP Link tech support yesterday and they were unable to fix it, so they escalated to their engineering team.

I received an email from their team stating that they needed me to install Team Viewer on my laptop (from the link in the email) along with giving times I am available so they could check my router's debug log (they are in GMT +8 which is China Taiwan Time (CCT), Western Standard Time (Australia), Hong Kong Time, Irkutsk Time). They also need my Team Viewer login and password (which I don't have yet due to not clicking on the link and installing it).

I am leery regarding this and was wondering what others who know more think. I will say that my laptop is ~6 months old and the WI-FI can handle up to 2.4 GB, my routers are 2 weeks old at best, I am about six feet from the main router and it is connected to the modem on the 2.5GB port with a CAT 6 cable. I am unable to test from the modem to a device as anything new I have lacks an ethernet cable.

Thank you.

Yeah, the 2GB internet offerings are a bit of a gimmick. Outside of speedtests, you'll never really be able to utilize all that bandwidth. Because the internet is like a 2-way highway, and your throughput is dependent on the speed of both lanes. Only one of which you control. For example, when you get online and go to download Midget Nurse Night Shift 3, your transfer rate will only be as great as the bandwidth capability of the source you're downloading from. If you're transmitting at 1Gbps, but the website at the other end can only transmit data at 15Mbps, you'll have 985Mbps of unused bandwidth sitting there as your transfer rate is stuck at 15Mbps. You'll find this to be the case for the majority of the sites you access.

There are very very few websites out there than could ever allow you to use all the bandwidth you have available. If you could bump down to 1GB service, you'd likely never know the difference other than the bill...

Oh wow. That makes a ton of sense now. Thank you again.

Oh I agree. Now if I am getting half of what I pay for that is something to consider, which is why it looks like I may downgrade a little.

You're also wireless. That makes a huge difference.

It's becoming a lot more common on laptops as they get smaller in size. They get you by suckering you into buying a dock for Ethernet.

I have a 14" Dell that doesn't have a native ethernet port and all of the surfaces that work buys lack one. I don't like it but I also understand most people don't care for ethernet.

The idea is to bypass the router completely for a short period to better gauge what your actual bandwidth is.

But tbh, it sounds like 2Gbps is overkill for you and it really ia for anyone that isn't torrenting porn all day and night.

When you verify that, focus on your home network at that point.

Generally a device will not make a wifi network visible if it's unable to connect to it. If your device can see the 5/6Ghz networks, it will connect to them.

I guarantee that they are throttling you, try to run a speed test in the middle of the night at like 3-4 am and see if speed changes at all. I have the 1gb Google fiber mesh system. I get 500 up and down wireless and just under a GB hardwired.

In Windows, click the start menu and type "CMD" to access the command prompt. Type "ping google.com" and choose "enter" to execute the function and retrieve a list of results. The results have several lines of data that show the speed along with other metrics.

Try this and tell us what the connection speed is

You hook it up directly to the router and you don’t get 90% of promised speed, they are throttling you.
