Disney+ documentary: Get Back (The Beatles)

Anyone else catch this yet. I was going to start it the other night and ended up bingeing all 6 hours. My god is it good.

What I learned:

Paul McCartney was/is a genius. The scene where he plucks Get Back out of thin air on a bass guitar in a matter of a few minutes is the stuff of legend.

Paul was like the kid in class that when a group project was assigned had to take control and do most of the work so the group would get a good grade. He was forced into a leadership role because the other three each had their various hang-ups, and history has painted the picture that he was power hungry, overbearing, and demanding…but this shows that wasn’t really the case. They had a hard deadline and he was basically saddled with the burden of leadership. He even said he feared it. I wonder if the narrative on him will change now.

They directly address yoko being there and that she was probably going to catch the blame for their breakup….so they knew even back then. I feel bad for her having the breakup pinned on her and having to shoulder the blame all of these years. Many may still ask, well why did she need to be there and why was she so clingy to John. Most people don’t know that she had suffered a miscarriage just a month or two before filming and was basically still grieving.

For me, one of the hardest parts was seeing George struggle with wanting more say but yet not even believing in himself enough to do so. The scene where he tells them, they need someone better like a Clapton and John says, no we need a George Harrison is crushing to see.

Ringo Starr is a whole mood. You’ll see what I mean when you watch it.

Paul McCartney is a living legend and possibly the greatest musical artist to ever live…just my opinion.

Why the hell people still lose their minds over a band that hasn't played together in 50 ****ing years, half of them are dead, and weren't all that special to begin with is beyond me.
Because they broke up. They never had a decline phrase like all bands have so people think if they didn't break up, it would have been amazing music for decades. It is the Nirvana syndrome.

Country music has the same thing with Keith Whitley. Great singer. Amazing voice. But he died young so people say stuff like he would have been bigger than Garth Brooks.

They even tried to reunite on SNL but got held up in traffic. Were they friends at all after 1974, though or just kind of both decided to put it behind themselves? You can see the video of McCartney being interviewed the evening he finds out about Lennon's murder, and he comes across pretty coldly, saying, "A drag, isn't it? Okay cheers."

I think that was a case of deceptive editing as I had only seen that one quip for years without seeing the full interview. In the full interview you can see he was clearly in shock. Yeah -- it felt cold, but I think it's better explained by Paul being in shock and Paul's dickish mannerisms in interviews coming across in the worst way.

I do think Paul is a controlling ****, btw -- but that's a defining characteristic of a lot of creative types with his talent.

Seriously - how often were these guys just high as can be?

I mean there are 3-4 times seemingly every session where they just bust into inexplicable giggle fits and end up losing the thread mid-song.

Either they're all prone to getting loopy and slap happy, they all have a bit of creative ADHD or they spent a LOT of time stoned off their asses.

Or...maybe all of the above?

I gotta be honest, some of this stuff would drive me absolutely nuts. When Lennon can't get through 15 seconds of recording before he starts pretending he's Arlo Guthrie or the queen, I'd eventually just throw a damn guitar at him.

Maybe that's what ultimately pissed Harrison off so much. He was the only one that was seemingly never amused by these shenanigans. And if you're some sound mixer or the recording agent that's watching them fiddle-**** around, how could it possibly not make you want to pull your hair out?

Peter Sellers kinda staring at them like "lord, what are you lunatics on about?" was pretty much a microcosm of what I'd feel like trying to work with them.

Good lord, lads - stay on task for like, an hour or two.
