Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense
Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense (it’s not all Bob Sutton)
https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2017/...all-bob-sutton Sometimes you hear something that you’re not sure is true, and you just shrug and move on with your life. At least, that’s what you do if you’re a healthy human being. If you’re not, you obsessively research until you’ve dug into the truth of the matter. Unfortunately for me (and perhaps fortunately for you), I fall into the latter camp. There’s a lot of talk about the defense right now, and deservedly so. After all, the pass defense looked quite poor against the Raiders merely a week after the run defense looked like a sieve against the Steelers. That’s... less than ideal. The Chiefs hung 30 on the Raiders but it wasn’t enough to win, and the defense wasn’t able to stop the Raiders from traveling 80 yards in under two minutes (well, with all the stoppages it was more like 20, but whatever) and scoring the game winning touchdown on Thursday. When stuff like that happens, people are going to talk. And that’s what has happened. A lot of talk about the defense against Oakland has been based around a few key points........ I mean, a fan being callous to an unsuccessful player is pretty normal, and a comment like this is pretty rare. So it makes me think you know the guy. If the guy could just find the ****ing ball when it's in the air, he'd be doing great. |

Yes I do know him. And you are right, he isnt where he needs to be. I can tell you it isnt because he isnt trying or doesn't care. He had a really hard time coming back from that injury. I just hate when people say he is done. I really believe he will be back. He is working so hard. Some players just need more time. I know this is a business and he needs to perform now. And the fan base expects this and they have a right to demand this. He will turn the corner whether it is with the Chiefs or another team. Ive not given up on him.

With Nelson, we would have had a pretty decent CB group. Without him we have to field Gaines, who has clearly lost whatever quickness and explosiveness he had prior to his injuries. |

I think it's easy for casual fans to be so critical as we tend to forget exactly how elite the athletes are on the edge in the NFL and that to be successful isn't just a matter of speed or proper technique, but more of an insane mix of hard work, unbelievable athletic gifts, and having quick twitch reflexes and instincts for virtually any situation. As many have previously stated, Gaines seems to have zero issue sticking with almost any receiver and often has great position, but he also seems to lack the extremely important ability to know when to turn and find the football right before the catch. Sort of a tragic state frankly, imagine having every possible gift to be a quality starting NFL corner but just missing one tiny yet critical skill. |

I think Gaines has lost a significant amount of quickness and explosiveness due to his knee injuries. He can't stick with guys on breaks and isn't strong/physical enough to make up for that loss in explosiveness. He's ok if you ask him to run in a straight line though.

I gave Keysor's podcast a listen on this topic, and he made the exact same points that I made in the film review thread I posted Saturday. It's borderline eerie how similar our responses to the film were.
