Anyone recall why we didn't move to resign Holland and Madson when we had the opportunities?

Holland was a MAJOR risk who signed a MASSIVE 1 year deal with built in incentives pushing his deal now towards 2 years - $32M with the Rockies you think the Royals should have offered him something like that when he was reported to be hitting 88 MPH velocity? I wish the Royals could have gotten him for 2 years - 12M (or something) and pay for his rehab year in hopes he'd give us a solid year this year - but Holland held out and got a GREAT prove-it deal from Colorado which may able him to opt out and then get like 3/40+ on the open market in the offseason Good for him, by the way. |

They tried with Holland before the 16 season; he didn't want to sign a deal that would have paid him to rehab. He bet on himself, and it has paid off. Before this season, he was topping out at 88-89 in his January showcase. In hindsight, we all wish they had taken the chance, but at the time, it would have been a major risk (and he was demanding a guarantee he would close). They talked to Madson but felt better moving forward with Soria for similar money. Again, hindsight. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Soria is that his peripherals are still pretty good in high leverage situations. He has limited opponents to a .339 OPS in tie games, with a 4.25:1 K:BB. That's cyborg-level. That number jumps to .599 in late and close games, but that's still very good. He hasn't stranded RISP consistently. His peripheral stats all suggest he should. Not much hard contact given up - only four extra base hits. The overall standard numbers also don't add up to a guy who has blown 7 saves (even if only five are 'clean inning' blown saves. That's also a side effect of a pitcher who doesn't strike out a lot of batters.

Soria strikes out 11/9, which is a very good rate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes but it doesn't FEEL like it. It's 2017, my feelings trump your facts.
